In a significant move to revitalise the high streets of England, the UK government has announced new powers that will be in effect by this summer. The initiative, known as High Street Rental Auctions, represents a local authority power designed to combat high street vacancy and breathe new life into the local economy.

High Street Rental Auctions

High Street Rental Auctions is a novel approach to address the issue of vacant shops that have been sitting idle for over a year. Moreover, these empty properties have been a blight on the high streets, creating an atmosphere of neglect and economic stagnation.

Furthermore, the new powers will allow local leaders to take control of these properties and rent them out to local businesses. The auctions will take place with no reserve price, providing local businesses and community groups the opportunity to occupy space on the high street at a competitive market rate.

Ultimately, this initiative is expected to stimulate local economies and create a vibrant, bustling atmosphere on the high streets

Trailblazer Programme and Financial Support

To facilitate the implementation of these new powers, the government is launching a new ‘trailblazer’ programme.

Additionally, the government is offering a £2 million support pot to kickstart these new powers in communities eager to be trailblazers. This financial support will help local authorities get up and running smoothly this summer, expediting the process and ensuring a successful transition to the new system.

Ministerial Support

The Minister for Levelling Up, Jacob Young, expressed his support for the initiative, stating,

“We want to bring high streets back to life and these new levelling up powers will help do just that. A lively high street brings an irreplaceable community spirit – one that is unique to its own area – along with new jobs and opportunities for local people.”

This statement underscores the government’s commitment to revitalising local communities and fostering economic growth.

Greening the High Streets

In addition to the High Street Rental Auctions, the government is also launching a new pilot programme aimed at greening the high streets. Ten areas will receive a share of £5 million to rejuvenate their high streets with new life and greenery.

Additionally, each of the 10 local authorities participating in the programme will receive £500,000 to create bespoke plans in partnership with local people and community organisations. This initiative is expected to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the high streets, making them more attractive to visitors and residents alike.

Timeline and Expectations

The first auctions are expected to take place in September this year, and the first new unit is anticipated to be occupied and open to the public in October. Furthermore, this timeline reflects the government’s commitment to swift action and tangible results.

Final Thoughts

The new powers and initiatives announced by the UK government are a significant step towards revitalising high streets across England. By giving local authorities the power to take control of empty shops and rent them out to local businesses, the government is not only addressing the issue of high street vacancy but also fostering local entrepreneurship and community spirit.

The additional funding for greening the high streets further underscores the government’s commitment to creating vibrant, sustainable, and community-centric urban spaces.

As we look forward to the implementation of these initiatives, there is a renewed sense of optimism for the future of England’s high streets.
