Context of the Speech

Key Points of Nusrat Ghani’s Speech

In her speech, Nusrat Ghani highlighted the Council’s role in standing up for Ukraine amidst the brutal and unjust war waged by Russia. Furthermore, she praised the swift actions taken by the Council, including suspending and expelling Russia and implementing the Register of Damage to document the impacts of the invasion.

Ghani also underscored the importance of continuing to meet today’s challenges and preparing for future ones.

Historical Context and Achievements

Since its founding in 1949, the Council of Europe has played a pivotal role in promoting peace and unity across the continent. Ghani recalled the Council’s significant achievements, such as its leading role in abolishing the death penalty and improving standards across Europe.

The adoption of the Convention on Artificial Intelligence exemplifies the Council’s ability to address contemporary issues.

Current Challenges and Future Goals

Ghani stressed the necessity of evolving to tackle new challenges, such as the scourge of people smuggling and ensuring the European Court of Human Rights system remains effective. She called for a united front to crush the business model of criminal gangs preying on vulnerable people and to uphold the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

UK’s Role and Support for Kosovo

The Minister reaffirmed the UK’s longstanding support for Kosovo’s ambition to join the Council of Europe. She expressed hope that Kosovo would soon be welcomed into the Council, highlighting the strength that comes from unity. Ghani’s speech reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting the Council’s mission and values.
