As tensions rise along the U.S.-Mexico border, the U.S. Border Patrol in the El Paso Sector has issued a stark reminder to criminals: assaulting federal officers will not be tolerated.

With recent incidents on the rise, this message comes at a crucial time, underscoring the legal repercussions that await those who engage in violent acts against law enforcement personnel.

Rising Threats Against Border Patrol Agents

The El Paso Sector has witnessed a troubling increase in attacks on Border Patrol agents in recent months. Since the beginning of Fiscal Year 2024, 66 agents have been assaulted, a number that reflects a growing challenge as more migrants and smugglers attempt to evade law enforcement.

In comparison, 104 agents were assaulted during Fiscal Year 2023, highlighting a persistent and dangerous trend.

  • Common Assaults:
    • Migrants throwing rocks and glass bottles.
    • Use of vehicles as weapons.
    • Physical assaults, including spitting, biting, and pulling agents off vehicles.

These attacks not only endanger the lives of the brave men and women on the front lines but also threaten the safety and security of the nation.

Legal Consequences and Federal Law

Under U.S. law, specifically 18 USC 111, assaulting a federal officer is a serious crime. This statute covers a range of offenses, from resisting arrest to assault, kidnapping, and even the murder of federal officers while they are performing their official duties.

The penalties for these crimes are severe and are designed to deter individuals from attacking those who work tirelessly to protect the country’s borders.

The El Paso Sector is working closely with the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to ensure that those who assault federal officers face the full weight of the law.

Recent prosecutions serve as a stark reminder that the justice system is fully committed to protecting law enforcement personnel.

Notable Incidents of Assault

Recent examples of assaults on Border Patrol agents illustrate the dangers they face daily. In one incident, agents assigned to the Santa Teresa Station were assaulted by a subject who forcefully resisted arrest, spitting on and attempting to bite the agents.

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office accepted prosecution for the assault, underscoring the seriousness with which these cases are treated.

Another alarming event occurred when a Border Patrol agent conducting duties on an ATV was pulled off his vehicle by a subject. The aggressor was successfully prosecuted and returned to his country of origin, demonstrating the swift and decisive action taken against those who threaten federal officers.

Collaboration and Public Awareness

The U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector has been proactive in spreading awareness about the consequences of assaulting federal officers.

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony Scott Good recently released a public service announcement across social media platforms to highlight this issue.

He said,

“We will not tolerate any harm to the well-being of those dedicated to protecting others. Our law enforcement partners stand with us in bringing those responsible to justice.”

Attorney for the District of New Mexico Alex Uballez, further emphasizing the unified front of law enforcement agencies.

Public Service Announcement Highlights:

  • Assaulting federal officers is a federal crime with severe consequences.
  • Law enforcement agencies are committed to prosecuting offenders to the fullest extent.
  • Community cooperation is essential in reporting suspicious activities.

In a coordinated effort, the El Paso Sector is leveraging its partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to bring all aggressors to justice.

These collaborations ensure that those who commit these crimes face the appropriate legal penalties and serve as a deterrent to future assaults.

Ongoing Commitment to Law Enforcement Safety

The safety of U.S. Border Patrol agents remains a top priority as they continue to perform their duties under increasingly challenging conditions. The recent rise in assaults underscores the importance of vigilance and the need for strong legal frameworks to protect those who protect the nation.

Main Takeaways:

  • The El Paso Sector has seen a significant rise in assaults on Border Patrol agents.
  • Federal law, including 18 USC 111, imposes severe penalties on those who assault federal officers.
  • Collaboration with the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office ensures that offenders are prosecuted swiftly.

The U.S. Border Patrol’s Message is Clear

Assaulting federal officers will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such acts will face serious legal consequences. As these incidents continue to rise, the commitment to law enforcement safety and the rule of law remains unwavering.

For more information or to report suspicious activity, citizens are encouraged to contact the U.S. Border Patrol anonymously at 1-800-635-2509.
