On Saturday, September 14, 2024, Tucson residents will have a convenient opportunity to dispose of hazardous household materials and securely shred personal documents at no cost.

The event, organized by the City of Tucson’s Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD), highlights the city’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection and community safety.

A Community Effort Towards Safety and Sustainability

Tucson’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Document Shredding Event are more than just an opportunity to clean out garages and home offices; it’s a community-driven initiative to ensure that dangerous chemicals and sensitive information are properly handled.

With this event, the EGSD aims to reduce environmental risks, prevent identity theft, and encourage responsible waste management practices among residents.

What You Can Dispose Of

The event will accept a variety of household hazardous waste items, including but not limited to:

  • Paints and solvents
  • Automotive fluids
  • Household cleaners
  • Pesticides
  • Batteries
  • Fluorescent bulbs

Full List of acceptable waste items.

Residents are encouraged to bring these items to the event for safe disposal, keeping harmful substances out of landfills and waterways. Additionally, the event offers free document shredding services, helping Tucsonans protect their personal information from potential fraud and identity theft.

Event Details

Date: Saturday, September 14, 2024
Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Tucson Convention Center, Lot A, 260 S Church Ave, Tucson, AZ 85701

Participants are advised to arrive early, as past events have seen high turnout. There is no need to register, and the event is free of charge for all Tucson residents.

Why It Matters

Proper disposal of hazardous waste is crucial for protecting our environment. When these materials are thrown away in regular trash, they can leach into the soil and water, causing long-term environmental damage.

By participating in this event, residents contribute to a healthier and cleaner Tucson, ensuring that dangerous substances are handled with care.

Document shredding is equally important, especially in an age where identity theft is a growing concern. Shredding personal documents prevents sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands, safeguarding your identity and financial security.

Eco-Friendly Tips for Tucson Residents

Beyond participating in the HHW event, there are several ways Tucson residents can continue to protect the environment and maintain community safety:

  • Use eco-friendly products: Opt for non-toxic, biodegradable cleaners and household products.
  • Recycle properly: Familiarize yourself with Tucson’s recycling guidelines to ensure that recyclable items don’t end up in the trash.
  • Compost organic waste: Reduce your household waste by composting food scraps and yard waste, which can be used to enrich garden soil.

Final Thoughts

The Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding Event is an excellent opportunity for Tucson residents to take an active role in protecting both the environment and their personal security.

By disposing of hazardous materials and shredding sensitive documents, you can contribute to a safer, cleaner, and more sustainable Tucson.
