On Friday, September 20th, 2024, the City of Tucson invites the community to participate in Park(ing) Day, a global event that will transform parking spaces on W Congress St into temporary green spots for gathering, games, and pop-up food vendors.

This exciting event, running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., also offers a preview of two significant city projects aimed at improving safety and walkability.

Reimagining Public Spaces

Park(ing) Day is more than just a fun day out. It encourages Tucsonans to rethink how we use urban spaces. By temporarily converting curbside parking into small parks or “parklets,” the event promotes sustainability and sparks conversation about the future of public spaces in Tucson.

Visitors can expect an interactive experience with games, local food vendors, and displays that highlight the city’s efforts to create safer, more pedestrian-friendly streets.

Projects in Focus

Two upcoming projects will take center stage during Park(ing) Day: the Congress Street/Grande Avenue Safety Project and the Grande Avenue Pedestrian Safety and Walkability Project.

These initiatives, funded by Propositions 411 and 407, aim to enhance safety, accessibility, and community connectivity. Both projects are vital to making Tucson more walkable and inclusive, ensuring that all modes of transportation—from cars to bicycles—are accommodated.

Congress Street/Grande Avenue Safety Project

This safety initiative targets the critical stretch of Congress Street between Melrose Avenue and Bonita Avenue. Specifically, with the vital support of funding from Proposition 411, the project will enhance street lighting, upgrade sidewalks, and implement essential traffic-calming features.

Moreover, these improvements will have a direct impact on safety. Designed to make the area safer for all users, it will play a crucial role in reducing accidents and creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

Consequently, this initiative will significantly contribute to a decrease in incidents and foster a more harmonious coexistence between drivers and pedestrians.

Additionally, the project’s success will set a precedent for future safety initiatives in the area.

Main elements of the project include:

  • Enhanced street lighting and traffic signal technology upgrades.
  • Improved sidewalks and bicycle lanes for safer commuting.

Grande Avenue Pedestrian Safety and Walkability Project

The Grande Avenue project, spanning 0.7 miles between Congress Street and St. Mary’s Road, focuses on pedestrian safety and overall walkability. Funded through Proposition 407, this initiative connects key neighborhoods, parks, and schools.

It will also feature traffic-calming measures and innovative water harvesting systems, designed to improve Tucson’s urban landscape while making streets safer.
