This honor recognizes the city’s Academy for International Trade, a program designed to strengthen cross-border business ties with Mexico and drive Tucson’s economic growth.
Tucson’s Cross-Border Business Initiative Shines
The Academy for International Trade, an initiative by the City of Tucson, was awarded the IEDC’s Gold Award in the Regional or Cross-Border Partnership category during the council’s Annual Conference.
This award highlights the city’s commitment to fostering cross-border economic partnerships, particularly with Mexican small and medium-sized businesses looking to expand into the Arizona market.
Held from October 2023 to January 2024 in Nogales, Sonora, the Academy is part of a broader strategy to diversify Tucson’s economy by attracting international investments and creating new business opportunities.
A Program with Regional Impact
The Academy for International Trade was launched to meet a growing need for cross-border collaboration. Tucson has long been an important player in Arizona’s trade with Mexico, and this program aims to boost the city’s international trade profile.
With support from the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales, the program provided training to 31 Mexican entrepreneurs.
These business owners, representing industries like renewable energy, agriculture, and manufacturing, participated in a series of workshops aimed at navigating the complexities of international trade.
More than just educational, the program has helped strengthen regional supply chains, making cross-border trade more efficient.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero expressed her excitement about the award, stating,
