Residents of Tucson are invited to participate in the upcoming 1st Avenue Improvement Project, a crucial initiative aimed at modernizing one of the city’s main corridors.

Both in-person and virtual open house events will be held to gather community feedback on project designs and priorities.

A Project for All Tucsonans

The City of Tucson, in partnership with the Pima Association of Governments and the Regional Transportation Authority, is spearheading efforts to improve 1st Avenue from River Road to Grant Road.

This ambitious project will enhance safety, accessibility, and convenience for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The open house events provide an opportunity for residents to voice their opinions and help shape the final design.

Event Details:

  • In-Person Open House: Wednesday, October 9, 2024, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Donna Liggins Recreation Center (2160 N 6th Avenue, Tucson, AZ).
  • Virtual Open House: Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.
Join online or by phone at +1-669-444-9171 (Webinar ID: 969 6284 3250).

These events will provide an overview of the project, current corridor conditions, and the proposed improvements. Community members will also have the chance to share their thoughts on various aspects of the project, from traffic safety to environmental impact.

What’s in Store for 1st Avenue?

The 1st Avenue Improvement Project is set to modernize the corridor by introducing several upgrades, including:

  • A new bridge over the Rillito River
  • Pavement reconstruction for a smoother drive
  • Continuous, accessible sidewalks
  • Enhanced bicycle lanes
  • Upgraded traffic signals and safety features
  • Improved drainage systems to prevent flooding
  • Landscaping to beautify the area

This extensive overhaul is part of the Complete Streets framework, which aims to create streets that are safer and more comfortable for everyone, including those who walk, bike, and use public transit.

Why Your Input Matters

The city is committed to ensuring that the project reflects the needs of the community. Tucson residents play a vital role in shaping the future of 1st Avenue.

By attending the open house events, you can provide feedback that may influence decisions about design elements, safety improvements, and environmental considerations.

To make your voice heard, you can:

  • Attend either the in-person or virtual open house events
  • Fill out the brief community survey available on the project’s official website
  • Leave comments on the interactive map, highlighting specific areas of concern or suggestions for improvements

Your input is critical in ensuring the project aligns with local needs, from improving traffic flow to enhancing the experience for cyclists and pedestrians.

Upcoming Developments

In the coming months, the project team will finalize the design based on the community feedback and continue efforts to secure funding.
