The City of Tucson is preparing to breathe new life into the long-closed Mission Manor Aquatic Park.

With funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in sight, the park’s outdated facilities will soon undergo a complete transformation, bringing fresh recreational options to the Sunnyside neighborhood.

Residents have until October 15, 2024, to submit their comments on the city’s environmental assessment of the project.

Major Renovation for Tucson’s Mission Manor Park

The project, set to cost an estimated $6.2 million, will include the demolition of the current aquatic complex, which has been closed since 2008, and the construction of a new, modern public swimming facility.

The new aquatic complex will feature a recreation pool with zero-depth entry for accessible activities like low-impact aerobic exercises, swim lessons, and therapy. Additionally, a splashpad and a public plaza area will be created to enhance community gatherings and family-friendly recreation.

The project also includes the addition of office spaces, showers, bathrooms, and storage to support the facility’s operations.

New sidewalks will surround the aquatic complex to improve accessibility and safety. The facility will be open seasonally, extending from April to November depending on staffing and maintenance needs.

Environmental Impact and Community Engagement

Before moving forward with the project, the City of Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) conducted a thorough environmental review.

The review concluded that the renovations would have no significant impact on the human environment, eliminating the need for a detailed Environmental Impact Statement.

Review the Environmental Review Record (ERR): visit us online or in person at HCD’s office on North Commerce Park Loop.

Residents, organizations, or agencies interested in submitting feedback on the environmental review or the proposed plans can send written comments to HCD by October 15, 2024. All feedback will be taken into account before the city submits its final request for HUD funding.

Enhancing the Sunnyside Neighborhood

The Mission Manor Aquatic Park renovation is a significant step forward for Tucson’s parks. Not only will it offer a modern swimming and recreation space, but also enrich the quality of life for Sunnyside residents.
Moreover, the park’s green features align with Tucson’s environmental and public health goals, promoting a healthier community. Furthermore, this project will stimulate community engagement and deliver essential public amenities to a historic neighborhood.
Ultimately, the new aquatic complex will foster health, wellness, and social connections among Tucson residents for years to come, serving as a vibrant community hub.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, residents interested in the project can stay informed through the City of Tucson’s website and public notices.

Meanwhile, as the city awaits HUD’s decision on funding, community feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the future of this valuable local asset.

Ultimately, this collective input will ensure that the project aligns with the needs and vision of the community.
