The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s stability and growth through a recent visit by the UK Minister for International Development and Women & Equalities, Anneliese Dodds.

Her trip to Ethiopia aimed to bolster the UK-Ethiopia partnership, focusing on peace, security, and economic development.

UK’s Commitment to Ethiopia

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Minister Dodds met with Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Taye Atske-Selassie, to discuss the UK’s support for peace and security across Ethiopia and the wider region.

This visit underscores the UK’s long-standing relationship with Ethiopia, built on mutual respect and a shared vision for global peace and prosperity.

The Minister expressed concern about the devastating impact of conflict in Amhara and Oromia on civilians and urged all parties to de-escalate and engage in peaceful dialogue. The UK continues to advocate for humanitarian support and inclusive dialogue to resolve these conflicts.

Economic Development and Reforms

Historical Economic Growth

Ethiopia has experienced significant economic growth over the past two decades, driven by substantial public investment in infrastructure and social development programs.

This growth has led to notable reductions in poverty, with the proportion of the population living in poverty decreasing from 44% in 2000 to 23% in 2018.

Current Challenges and Reforms

Despite this growth, Ethiopia faces challenges such as high inflation, foreign exchange shortages, and slowing economic growth. Recent macroeconomic reforms, supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, aim to address these issues.

These reforms include the adoption of a floating exchange rate system and the use of interest rates as a policy tool to stabilize the economy and promote growth.

Areas of Support

  1. Peace and Security: The UK is committed to supporting peace and security initiatives in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa region.
  2. Economic Growth: The UK is working with Ethiopia to implement economic reforms that promote stability and growth.
  3. Humanitarian Aid: The UK continues to provide humanitarian support to address the impacts of conflict and other crises.
  4. Women’s Rights: Minister Dodds emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting the rights of women and girls in Ethiopia.

Quote from Minister Dodds

“During my visit, I set out my priorities under the new UK Government, including areas of common interest like economic transformation, support to humanitarian crises, and tackling global poverty, instability, and the climate and nature crisis.”

“The UK will continue to support and champion the rights of women and girls in Ethiopia”.

Regional and Global Cooperation

Minister Dodds also met with African Union Commissioner Bankole Adeoye to discuss peace and security issues across the continent, including in Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia. This highlights the UK’s broader commitment to regional stability and global cooperation.

As Ethiopia continues to navigate its economic and security challenges, the UK’s support remains crucial. The success of these efforts will not only benefit Ethiopia but also contribute to stability in the Horn of Africa region.

A Final Reflection

The UK’s support for Ethiopia is a testament to the strong and enduring partnership between the two nations. As Ethiopia moves forward with its economic reforms and peace initiatives, the UK stands ready to provide assistance and guidance.

This cooperation is essential for achieving lasting stability and growth, not just in Ethiopia, but across the region.
