A historic agreement between the UK and Mauritius secures the operation of Diego Garcia’s strategic military base for future security.

The UK and Mauritius have forged a landmark deal to safeguard the Diego Garcia military base, ensuring its vital role in regional and global security for the next century. This agreement not only resolves longstanding sovereignty disputes but also reinforces bilateral cooperation in the Indian Ocean.

Historic Sovereignty Agreement

After two years of meticulous negotiations, the Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom and Mauritius have reached an unprecedented political agreement regarding the Chagos Archipelago.

This deal officially transfers sovereignty of the archipelago, including Diego Garcia, to Mauritius while maintaining the operational integrity of the existing military base.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the significance of this accord:

“Today’s agreement secures this vital military base for the future. It will strengthen our role in safeguarding global security and guarantee our long-term relationship with Mauritius, a close Commonwealth partner.”

Strategic Importance of Diego Garcia

Diego Garcia has been a cornerstone of UK-US military operations, playing a crucial role in maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The island serves as a strategic hub for counter-terrorism, maritime security, and humanitarian missions.

Important Aspects of this Agreement

The agreement encompasses several critical elements to ensure the base’s continued operation and Mauritius’s sovereignty:

  • Sovereignty Transfer: Mauritius gains full sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago.
  • Operational Authority: The UK is authorized to exercise Mauritius’s sovereign rights on Diego Garcia for 99 years, ensuring uninterrupted military operations.
  • Security Commitments: Both nations pledge to maintain the base’s security and operational effectiveness.
  • Support for Chagossians: The treaty includes provisions for the resettlement and welfare of the Chagossian population.
  • Economic and Environmental Partnership: The UK will provide financial support and collaborate on environmental protection and economic development projects in Mauritius.
