Phoenix residents are invited to the Pima Canyon Trailhead on October 17, 2024, for the launch of the “Stop Poo-llution” campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the environmental impact of pet waste and promoting responsible disposal practices.

Why Pet Waste Matters for Phoenix

The City of Phoenix Water Services Department’s Stormwater Section is rolling out the “Stop Poo-llution: Bag It, Tie It, Trash It” initiative to tackle a significant local issue—pet waste pollution. When rain falls, stormwater picks up pollutants, including pet waste, and flows untreated into the city’s waterways.

This contamination can introduce harmful bacteria like E. coli into the environment, posing risks to both public health and local ecosystems. By educating residents, Phoenix aims to keep its parks, trails, and waterways clean and safe.

Event Details and Activities

The event will take place on Thursday, October 17, from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Pima Canyon Trailhead, located at 4500 E Pima Canyon Rd. Attendees can look forward to several engaging activities, including:

  • Educational Booths: Learn about the environmental effects of pet waste and explore tips for proper disposal.
  • Interactive Demonstrations: See firsthand how to “Bag It, Tie It, Trash It” using pet waste bags and disposal stations.
  • Free Giveaways: Pet waste bags, portable water bowls, and other items will be distributed to help promote responsible pet ownership.

This campaign event is the first phase of a larger initiative that will extend outreach efforts across Phoenix parks and trails, focusing initially on the Pima Canyon and Telegraph Pass areas.

How Pet Waste Impacts the Environment

Even in a desert city like Phoenix, where rain is rare, stormwater management remains vital. Pet waste left on trails and in parks doesn’t just disappear; it becomes a serious pollutant when rain eventually washes it into storm drains.

The waste carries harmful bacteria and viruses that can contaminate local water sources and negatively impact aquatic ecosystems. Keeping parks clean not only ensures public health but also preserves Phoenix’s natural environment for residents and visitors alike.

What Residents Can Do

Participating in the “Stop Poo-llution” campaign is simple. Residents are encouraged to bring their pets to the event and adopt proper waste disposal habits:

  • Bag It: Always carry a pet waste bag when out walking your dog.
  • Tie It: Secure the bag to prevent leakage.
  • Trash It: Dispose of the bag in designated waste bins, not in the environment.

These small steps contribute to a cleaner, healthier Phoenix and demonstrate civic responsibility. For those unable to attend, information and resources will be available on the City of Phoenix website and its social media channels.

Other Ways to Reduce Stormwater Pollution

While managing pet waste is a critical part of the campaign, Phoenix residents can also take additional steps to protect local waterways:

Action

Impact

Properly dispose of chemicals and trash Prevents hazardous substances from entering storm drains.
Recycle motor oil and fix vehicle leaks Reduces pollutants from vehicles affecting water quality.
Limit pesticide use Minimizes chemical runoff that can harm plants and wildlife.
Dispose of electronics and paints at Public Works events Keeps toxic materials out of the water system.

These actions align with the city’s broader goals of sustainability and urban planning, supporting efforts to maintain Phoenix’s reputation as a clean, eco-conscious community.

Join the Effort to Keep Phoenix Clean

The City of Phoenix is committed to creating a safer, more sustainable environment through community engagement and proactive education.

The “Stop Poo-llution” campaign encourages residents to take part in simple, effective actions that make a big difference in the quality of local parks, trails, and waterways.

By working together, Phoenix can continue to be a city where outdoor spaces are not only beautiful but also safe and enjoyable for all.
