Phoenix residents can look forward to smoother commutes as the city has secured a $12.9 million grant to address traffic congestion.

Through Project EASE, an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the city will introduce new microtransit zones, enhancing public transportation options and easing congestion.

Phoenix’s Traffic Solution: Project EASE

The City of Phoenix designed Project EASE (Effective Access Solutions for Easing Congestion) to expand transit options and reduce traffic.

With a focus on three major microtransit zones, the initiative will increase flexibility for riders and integrate with the Valley Metro app for easy trip planning, vehicle tracking, and digital fare payment.

Here’s how the project is expected to unfold over the next few years:

  • Microtransit Zones: Three microtransit zones will be rolled out, each strategically selected to target high-traffic areas.
  • Enhanced RAPID Bus Service: New microtransit zones will work alongside the city’s RAPID bus service, providing additional commuter options.
  • Improved App Integration: Services will be integrated with the Valley Metro app, offering real-time tracking and streamlined fare payment.

Funding and Partnership Details

Project EASE’s total budget totals $16.2 million, with the City of Phoenix contributing $3.2 million locally, supplemented by a federal grant.

This funding partnership will enable the city to undertake infrastructure improvements with the support of Via Transportation, Inc., a company specializing in microtransit solutions.

Projected Benefits for Phoenix Commuters

Phoenix’s Mayor, Kate Gallego, expressed optimism about the grant, highlighting its impact on local transportation.

“Today marks an exciting day for Phoenix. The grant for Project EASE not only helps relieve congestion but also advances innovative solutions for public transit.”

For Phoenix residents, this initiative promises several immediate and long-term benefits:

  • Reduced Travel Time: More transit options could ease travel times in high-traffic zones.
  • Convenient Technology: App integration will allow riders to plan trips and track vehicles with ease.
  • Community Engagement: The project will include public outreach in 2025, allowing residents to shape services according to community needs.

What to Expect Next

In 2025, Phoenix’s Public Transit Department will launch community outreach and engagement efforts, inviting residents to provide input on the new services. Project EASE’s rollout will gradually increase transit capacity and efficiency while reducing congestion in the areas that need it most.

With Phoenix’s commitment to improving commuter experiences and reducing congestion, residents can expect a more efficient, accessible, and tech-friendly public transit system on the horizon.

Mayor Gallego highlighted, this investment is not only a step toward congestion relief but also a move to “keep our city moving efficiently.”
