Tucson Mayor Approves Housing Investment

The Tucson Mayor and Council have officially approved the People, Communities, and Homes Investment Plan (P-CHIP), a five-year strategy aimed at expanding affordable housing and strengthening local community resources.

With this plan, the City of Tucson sets a path forward for strategic investments, community collaboration, and targeted funding to benefit residents across Tucson.

Building a Foundation for Community Development

The P-CHIP plan, approved on November 7, outlines Tucson’s approach to supporting residents in need through a wide-ranging strategy.

Housing and Community Development (HCD), the city department at the core of P-CHIP, is committed to ensuring all Tucson residents have access to safe, affordable housing and essential support services.

Focal areas of the P-CHIP include:

• Affordable Housing: Expanding affordable rental and housing options for low-income residents.
• Community Resources: Supporting vital services like shelter programs, emergency assistance, and community revitalization.

In addition, P-CHIP’s strategic planning highlights the importance of partnerships between city departments, local organizations, and residents to achieve these goals.

Opportunities for Non-Profits: Calls for Projects Now Open

The City of Tucson is now inviting applications from non-profit organizations to support the P-CHIP initiatives. Four primary funding programs are available, each aimed at advancing housing and community support in Tucson:

1. HOME Rental Program: Funds affordable rental housing projects that serve low-income households.
2. City of Tucson General Fund: Supports programs aligned with P-CHIP’s broader goals, ranging from housing to essential services.
3. Emergency Services Grant: Backs initiatives for homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and rapid rehousing.
4. Community Development Block Grant: Funds neighborhood revitalization, economic development, and community services for low- to moderate-income residents.

For non-profits interested in applying, applications open next week and will remain available until the end of December.

Pre-Proposal Conferences and Application Support

To guide applicants through the funding process, the city will hold two virtual pre-proposal conferences on November 18. Each session will allow participants to ask questions about the Calls for Projects and receive insights on creating a competitive application.

Recordings of these sessions will also be available online within two business days for those unable to attend live.
