The Government Art Collection is set to commemorate its 125th anniversary in 2025 with two free public exhibitions in Bradford and London, celebrating British art’s diversity and cultural impact.

The exhibitions promise a dynamic blend of historical significance, community involvement, and contemporary creativity.

A Landmark Celebration of British Art

In a year of cultural milestones, the Government Art Collection is honoring its 125th year with two major exhibitions:

  • Bradford: Starting January 31, 2025, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery will host artworks chosen by 125 young people across the district as part of Bradford’s UK City of Culture year.
  • London: Opening May 2025 at The National Archives, Kew, this exhibition will showcase artworks commissioned for King Charles III’s Coronation, featuring notable British artists.

These exhibitions underscore the Government Art Collection’s commitment to making art accessible to everyone, reflecting British history and creativity.

What Makes These Exhibitions Unique?

Bradford: Youth-Curated Artworks

Selected by young people aged 4 to 25, the Bradford exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the art world. Each piece is accompanied by personal reflections from the curators, providing insight into why these works resonated with them. This initiative, facilitated by the Healthy Mind Collective, aims to connect mental well-being and art, making the experience engaging for all visitors.

London: Coronation Commissions

Running for six months, the London exhibition will display artworks that capture the essence of King Charles III’s Coronation weekend. Featured artists include Vanley Burke, Hew Locke, Cornelia Parker, and Leslie Thompson. Designed to inspire young minds, the exhibition will include an educational program, offering schools a chance to explore modern British artistry.
