For the first time in history, a U.S. Army tank crew has won the prestigious International Tank Challenge in Grafenwoehr, Germany. Competing against teams from four other nations, the crew from the 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade, 1st Armored Division demonstrated superior tactical skill, endurance, and teamwork to claim the title.

A Landmark Achievement in Tank Warfare

The International Tank Challenge, hosted by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, tests participants in physical fitness, marksmanship, and strategic execution. This year’s competition featured teams from Italy, Denmark, Slovenia, and Switzerland, along with two U.S. teams.

The victorious crew—Army Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Greene (Commander), Sgt. Graham Parker (Gunner), Spc. Donovan Lavery (Loader), and Pfc. Nicolae Lawson (Driver)—rose from fifth place to first in the final hours, demonstrating exceptional resilience.

“It still hasn’t fully set in that we managed to win,” said Greene. “The competition was fierce, but we stayed focused and finished strong.”

The Path to Victory

The “Death Dealers” from Fort Bliss, Texas, took a unique approach to team selection. Instead of forming an all-star squad, battalion leaders chose the most well-rounded crew, ensuring a balance of tactical knowledge and practical skill.

Some factors in their success included:

  • Adaptability – Overcame early setbacks by adjusting strategy.
  • Precision – Excelled in tank gunnery and combat scenarios.
  • Resilience – Maintained focus under pressure, moving from mid-rank to first place.

Performance Breakdown

The challenge consisted of 10 graded events, each testing a critical aspect of modern tank warfare.

Event Tests U.S. Army Performance
Tank Gunnery Accuracy & Speed Top-ranked
Obstacle Navigation Maneuvering Skills High Marks
Endurance Test Physical Fitness Strong Finish
Tactical Operations Strategic Execution Above Average
Mental Agility Decision-Making Competitive

Notably, the team’s superior gunnery skills were a decisive factor in securing their victory.

Why This Win Matters

Winning this competition underscores the U.S. Army’s combat readiness and training effectiveness. The victory highlights:

  • Tactical Excellence – U.S. forces are prepared for high-stakes armored warfare.
  • Training Superiority – Fort Bliss’ rigorous preparation programs are yielding results.

“They never quit,” said Army Lt. Col. Robert Humphrey. “With just 56 hours left, they pushed ahead and proved their strength.”

Recognition and Future Implications

As a result of their historic victory, the crew received:

  • Army Commendation Medals for their outstanding performance.
  • Induction into the Honorable Order of St. George, a prestigious award in the armored community.

This achievement also sets a new standard for future U.S. tank crews competing in international challenges.

Looking Ahead

With this victory, the U.S. Army has established itself as a dominant force in tank warfare competitions. The win reinforces the importance of continuous training, teamwork, and adaptability in high-pressure environments.
