The UK government has unveiled a new National Youth Strategy, aiming to empower young people by involving them in policy-making processes.

This initiative, announced today, seeks to break down barriers to opportunities and improve youth services across the country through a collaborative approach.

Empowering Young Voices

The National Youth Strategy marks a significant shift in how youth policies are developed in the UK.

By placing young people at the center of decision-making, the government aims to create more inclusive and responsive policies that directly address their needs.

This approach is expected to lead to better-coordinated youth services at local, regional, and national levels.

Funding for Future Generations

To support this initiative, the government has allocated over £85 million for youth facilities, supplemented by an additional £100 million from dormant assets funding.

This investment will enhance existing services and create new opportunities for young people across the UK.

The strategy also includes face-to-face engagements, online surveys, and ‘Democracy Cafes’ as platforms for gathering input from young people.

Share Your Thoughts and Opinions

They are inviting young people aged 10-21, and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) up to 25, to share their thoughts in a survey.

This will help shape the National Youth Strategy and ensure we provide the right opportunities, facilities, and support services to help them thrive outside of school.

They want to hear from young people to help deliver the government’s Plan for Change. Share your thoughts on what matters most to you in your community, what services you think are essential for young people, and how local funding should be spent.

Your opinions will help spread opportunities across the nation.

Opportunities for Young People

  • Increased access to youth facilities
  • Enhanced educational support programs
  • Improved employment opportunities
  • Greater involvement in policy-making processes
  • Diverse perspectives through expert and youth advisory groups

Stakeholders Comments

Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy said:

“We are handing power back to young people and their communities, giving them a genuine opportunity to help make the policies that affect their lives.”

“We want to hear from young people directly through one of the most ambitious listening exercises for a generation – Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Nation.”

“We are providing young people with a genuine voice, delivering on our Plan for Change and creating opportunities in every part of the country.”

Minister for Civil Society, Stephanie Peacock said:

“We are breaking down the barriers to opportunity that young people face and giving them the chance to have their say – on what they want from the Government and how public policies can work for them.”

“I encourage all young people to fill in the survey and tell us what you think so you can help shape a brighter future for you and your generation.”

A Historical Perspective on Youth Services

This announcement follows years of cuts in youth service spending since 2010, which have led to fragmented provision across the country.

The new strategy aims to address these gaps by building on previous initiatives, replacing the National Citizen Service (NCS). Industry leaders view this as an opportunity to set out a comprehensive vision for youth work.

A Model for Inclusive Policymaking?

Internationally, this strategy could serve as a model for inclusive policymaking by highlighting the UK’s commitment to empowering its younger generation.

It may influence global discussions on youth policy and engagement, particularly in countries facing similar challenges in providing adequate youth services.

By actively involving young people in shaping policies that affect their lives, this initiative could lead to significant improvements in access to opportunities and services nationwide.
