The UK government has committed nearly £38 million to introduce 319 zero-emission buses across England by spring 2027, aiming to enhance public transport with cleaner and more affordable options.

This initiative supports local economies, creates jobs, and aligns with the UK’s zero-emission goals.

Green Transport Initiative

The UK government’s investment in zero-emission buses marks a significant step towards a sustainable future. By introducing 319 new buses, the initiative aims to improve air quality and contribute to a greener transport network.

This move is part of the broader Plan for Change, which focuses on reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transport solutions.

Councils Who Benefit the Most

The largest beneficiaries include the West of England Combined Authority, which will receive almost £20 million for 160 buses.

Hull City Council will receive £3.9 million to provide 42 vehicles, and Nottinghamshire County Council, which will receive £2.6 million to introduce 42 new electric buses.

Economic Boost Through Private Investment

This initiative is expected to have substantial economic benefits. For every pound of government funding, at least £3 of private investment is anticipated, boosting regional economies.

The collaboration with UK manufacturers ensures that a significant portion of these buses will be sourced domestically, further supporting local industries and job creation.

Effect on Communities

The introduction of zero-emission buses will significantly affect communities across England. Residents can look forward to cleaner, quieter bus journeys that enhance access to essential services like hospitals and universities.

The focus on affordable travel through sustainable transport solutions underscores the government’s commitment to improving public transportation for all citizens.

Job Creation in Engineering and Construction

  • Creation of highly skilled jobs in engineering sectors
  • Support for local construction projects related to infrastructure development
  • Strengthening of domestic manufacturing capabilities
  • Opportunities for local businesses involved in green technology
  • Enhanced community engagement through job opportunities

Sustainable Transport

This investment aligns with global trends towards sustainable transport, positioning the UK as a leader in green technology adoption.

By focusing on domestic manufacturing, the UK demonstrates its commitment to supporting its industries during this transition.

This move could potentially influence other countries to adopt similar strategies in their pursuit of sustainability.

Ministers Comments

Local Transport Minister, Simon Lightwood, said:

“I’m thrilled to announce this £38 million investment, which will deliver 319 new zero emission buses to communities across England by 2027. This funding will not only make bus travel cleaner, greener and more comfortable, but it will deliver on our Plan for Change, creating jobs, supporting local economies and accelerating our journey towards a zero emission future.

By backing local councils and UK manufacturers, we are putting the power in the hands of communities, while helping to deliver on our vision of a sustainable, green transport network.

From Hull to Hove, there’s an electrifying future on the way for our buses.”
