Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a Venezuelan national and member of the Tren de Aragua gang, was arrested by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Bellevue, Nebraska, after violently attacking an ICE special agent and an FBI agent.

This incident underscores the increasing risks faced by law enforcement in dealing with violent criminals and gang members.

The arrest of Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco highlights ongoing challenges related to illegal immigration and gang activity within the United States.

During the arrest  the illegal alien threw the ICE agent to the ground, slammed her head into the pavement, ripped off her body armor, and made repeated and physical violent contact.

The agent sustained serious injuries to her head and arm and was immediately transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for treatment.

Tren de Aragua Gang Member

As a member of the Tren de Aragua gang, known for its criminal activities, Hurtado-Cariaco’s actions pose significant threats to national security and public safety.

Hurtado-Cariaco entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was removed by Border Patrol. However, he re-entered illegally in 2024 and was released with a notice to appear.

This case raises concerns about current immigration policies that allow repeated illegal entries into U.S. communities.

Law Enforcement Challenges

  • The incident reflects a reported 500% increase in assaults against ICE agents.
  • Federal law enforcement faces growing risks from violent criminals like Hurtado-Cariaco.
  • There is a need for increased support and resources for federal agencies handling such cases.
  • This situation emphasizes the importance of prosecuting assaults on federal officers to maintain law enforcement morale.

International Relations

  • The involvement of Venezuelan nationals in U.S.-based criminal activities may strain diplomatic relations between the two countries.
  • This case could influence U.S. policy approaches toward Venezuelan migrants entering the country illegally.
  • It highlights broader issues of border security under current administration policies.

“This Venezuelan national is a criminal illegal alien and Tren de Aragua gang member who violently attacked an ICE and FBI agent and has been charged with attempted murder.”

Said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
