The Wealden Heaths National Nature Reserve in Surrey has been designated as the ninth reserve in the King’s Series, protecting rare heathland habitats and species.

This initiative enhances biodiversity, supports local economies through eco-tourism, and provides accessible green space for nearby residents.

Preserving Surrey’s Natural Heritage

The Wealden Heaths National Nature Reserve spans 2,765 hectares, offering a sanctuary for rare species like sand lizards and nightjars.

This designation combines existing protected areas with over 900 hectares of previously undesignated land now under conservation management.

The reserve is a collaborative effort involving nine partners, including Natural England and the RSPB.

Community Benefits

  • Improved access to natural spaces for recreation and education
  • Boost to local economies through increased visitor spending
  • Support for farming livelihoods via conservation grazing practices
  • Opportunities for eco-tourism growth near urban centers like London
  • Cultural enrichment through connections to literary figures and folklore

A Cultural and Ecological Treasure

The area has inspired literary figures such as Alfred Lord Tennyson and Arthur Conan Doyle. It also features cultural landmarks like Waggoners Well.

The Thursley Common Boardwalk within the reserve is celebrated as “Britain’s Favourite Path” by the Ramblers Association, enhancing its appeal to visitors.

Quotes from Key Figures

“Britain is a nation of nature lovers – proud of our iconic landscapes and charismatic wildlife,”

said Mary Creagh, Nature Minister at the UK Government.

“This new reserve offers wonderful opportunities for people to experience the outdoors and spot rare wildlife in a place which has been a source of cultural inspiration for centuries.”

“The beautiful atmospheric landscape has had a huge influence in culture over the centuries,” noted Marian Spain, Chief Executive of Natural England.

“Its new status as a National Nature Reserve will ensure future generations continue to be inspired.”

Molly Biddell from Hampton Estate expressed pride in being part of this initiative:

“We are so proud and excited to be a part of Wealden Heaths National Nature Reserve… using conservation grazing, woodland management, and shared stewardship to increase biodiversity.”
