Early on July 2, U.S. Air and Marine Operations (AMO) intercepted a small vessel near Desecheo Island, Puerto Rico.

The crew seized 170 pounds of cocaine and detained two men from the Dominican Republic. The seized drugs have an estimated street value of $1.3 million.

Details of the Interception

The operation unfolded approximately 18 nautical miles west of Desecheo Island, a known transit point for maritime smuggling.

Air and Marine Operations agents, supported by a Multi-Role Enforcement Aircraft (MEA), detected a blue and red, single-engine yola vessel suspected of illicit activity.

How the Vessel Was Detected

The MEA surveillance aircraft initially spotted the 20-foot yola, alerting nearby AMO marine units. The Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit dispatched two Coastal Interceptor vessels to pursue and intercept the suspicious craft.

Upon boarding the vessel, agents discovered four bales of suspected narcotics. Two individuals aboard the vessel lacked documentation to legally enter or remain in the United States.

Cocaine Seizure and Arrests

Location: Desecheo Island and Surrounding Waters

Desecheo Island, located off Puerto Rico’s western coast, often features in maritime smuggling routes due to its proximity to the Dominican Republic and uninhabited landscape.

The intercepted yola contained the following:

Seizure Details Description
Vessel Type 20-foot single-engine yola, blue with red trim
Contraband 170 pounds (76.6 kilograms) of cocaine
Estimated Value $1.3 million
Arrests 2 undocumented Dominican nationals

What Happens Next: DEA Investigation

Following the seizure, both suspects and the cocaine were transferred to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for further investigation and potential prosecution.

The DEA is responsible for leading criminal cases involving narcotics trafficking in U.S. territories.

AMO’s Role and Mission

Air and Marine Operations is a specialized component of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Their mission is to safeguard U.S. borders through advanced aviation and maritime enforcement.

Operating throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, AMO uses innovative capabilities to detect and intercept smuggling attempts.

The main aspects of AMO’s operations included:

  • Aerial and maritime patrols targeting illegal activity

  • Advanced surveillance technologies

  • Partnerships with federal agencies like the DEA

AMO’s strategic presence in the Caribbean continues to play a vital role in disrupting drug trafficking operations bound for U.S. shores.

In Conclusion

This successful interception near Desecheo Island highlights the crucial role AMO plays in securing U.S. borders and disrupting illegal drug trafficking.

With combined aerial and marine resources, operations like these demonstrate ongoing efforts to combat smuggling networks in the region.
