As communities in North Carolina and Florida grapple with the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, AmeriCorps has deployed over 140 additional members to support the ongoing disaster recovery efforts.

With these reinforcements, the organization aims to address urgent needs and assist in rebuilding efforts across the hardest-hit areas.

Immediate Relief for Impacted Communities

AmeriCorps swiftly responds to disasters, and following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, deployed over 140 Disaster Response Team members.

These members, hailing from various AmeriCorps programs across the country, will assist in:

  • Debris removal
  • Distribution of emergency supplies

The agency’s involvement is critical as both Florida and North Carolina begin the long road to recovery. Teams on the ground are also helping with shelter support and volunteer coordination, ensuring that the immediate needs of displaced residents are met efficiently.

Long-term Commitment to Rebuilding

While AmeriCorps is heavily focused on immediate relief work, the agency is equally committed to supporting communities in the long term.

CEO Michael D. Smith emphasized this point, noting that AmeriCorps members often remain in disaster-affected areas for months, or even years, after the initial event to assist with:

  • Rebuilding homes
  • Supporting mental health services for affected families

This dedication has earned AmeriCorps a reputation for being an organization that stands with communities long after the media spotlight fades.

AmeriCorps: A Critical Partner in Disaster Response

AmeriCorps’ disaster response is deeply integrated with other agencies and nonprofits. They work closely with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), local governments, and organizations like the American Red Cross.

AmeriCorps forges key partnerships to deliver vital services and ensure effective resource allocation for those in greatest need.

The current deployment brings the total number of AmeriCorps members involved in disaster relief to nearly 390. They are active not only in North Carolina and Florida but also in neighboring states like South Carolina and Georgia.

This coordinated effort ensures a wide-reaching impact, providing hope and tangible support to the many individuals affected by these natural disasters.

A Call for Volunteers

AmeriCorps ramps up recruitment, encouraging individuals to join national service efforts. Opportunities are available for those interested in helping communities rebuild and become more resilient.

AmeriCorps’ long-term presence in disaster zones means that volunteers can make a difference, whether in the immediate aftermath of a disaster or in the months that follow.

AmeriCorps’ deployment to North Carolina and Florida exemplifies its mission to help communities recover from natural disasters. The agency, bolstered by 140 new members, is poised to make a lasting impact through relief and rebuilding.
