Birkenhead is set to undergo a transformative regeneration with a £51 million investment from the Liverpool City Region and Homes England. This funding will revitalize a former gasworks site, bringing new homes, commercial spaces, and enhanced infrastructure to the area.

Birkenhead Regeneration: A New Era

Birkenhead, a town in the Wirral, is on the cusp of a significant transformation thanks to a substantial investment from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Homes England.

The £51 million funding is part of a broader Strategic Place Partnership agreement aimed at revitalizing a 65-acre former gasworks site.

The Project’s Scope

The Hind Street Urban Village project, also known as Birkenhead Central Gateway, is a comprehensive regeneration scheme.

Over the next 10 to 15 years, this project will:

  • Deliver 1,600 new homes
  • Create around 600,000 sq ft of commercial space
  • Develop green spaces and active travel infrastructure
  • Include a dedicated bus stop next to Birkenhead Central Station.

Funding Breakdown

The £51 million investment is split between Homes England and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Here is a breakdown of the funding:

Funding Source

Amount

Purpose

Homes England £29m Infrastructure for phase 1 homes delivery
Liverpool City Region £22m Enabling works (spine road, bus station, cycle route)
Total £51m Overall project funding

Infrastructure and Connectivity

The initial phase of the project, set to begin in 2025 and complete by 2027, will focus on 27 acres of the site.

This phase includes:

  • Building a spine road through the site
  • Constructing a new bus station and waiting facilities
  • Developing the Dock Branch Park South off-road cycle route
  • Relocating existing gas infrastructure.

Community Impact

Cllr. Paul Stuart, Leader of Wirral Council, emphasized the project’s significance:

“The Hind Street project is one of our major brownfield regeneration sites and it will be a model of urban living, well connected to public transport… providing high-quality open spaces, improved public realm, and the creation of active travel routes.”

This regeneration project is not just about physical development; it also aims to reduce inequalities and create jobs. The project aligns with Wirral Council’s broader regeneration strategy, which focuses on social, affordable, and people-focused regeneration.

Features of the Project

  • New Homes: 1,600 homes, including a mix of social and affordable housing.
  • Commercial Spaces: Approximately 600,000 sq ft of commercial space.
  • Green Spaces: Development of parks and green areas.
  • Transport Infrastructure: Improved bus facilities and active travel routes.
  • Community Facilities: Enhanced public realm and community amenities.

Final Thoughts

The £51 million investment in Birkenhead’s regeneration project marks a significant step towards transforming the area into a vibrant and connected urban village.

With its focus on sustainable development, community benefits, and economic growth, this project is set to make Birkenhead an even more attractive place to live and work.

As the project progresses, it will be exciting to see the tangible impact on the local community and the broader region.
