The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has launched a regulated Bluefin Tuna catch and release recreational fishery in English waters, effective from 18 July to 30 November 2025.

This initiative aims to promote sustainable fishing practices while ensuring compliance with legal requirements through data submission demonstrations for permit holders.

Opening of the Recreational Fishery

The MMO’s decision to open the Bluefin Tuna catch and release recreational fishery marks a significant development for UK anglers.

Running until 30 November 2025, this initiative is exclusively available to UK-registered vessels with permits.

The fishery emphasizes conservation by prohibiting the retention or transfer of Bluefin Tuna, focusing on sustainable recreational fishing practices.

Support for Anglers

  • Permit holders receive guidance on legal reporting requirements through MMO demonstration events.
  • Resources from the Angling Trust and UK Bluefin Tuna Association are available for ongoing support.
  • Strong attendance at events indicates commitment to responsible fishing among UK anglers.

Impact on Recreational Fishing

This announcement is crucial for recreational fishers and related businesses as it formalizes a regulated approach to catching Bluefin Tuna.

Compliance with data submission ensures sustainable management, protecting the species and supporting long-term viability of recreational fishing industries, charter operators, and local economies dependent on marine tourism.

Sustainable Practices

The emphasis on catch and release practices aligns with international conservation efforts under ICCAT.

The UK’s commitment to marine sustainability post-Brexit is evident in this initiative, which builds upon recent legislation introduced in May 2024 that mandates permits and prohibits unpermitted targeting of Bluefin Tuna within UK waters.

Challenges and Opportunities

Looking ahead, challenges include ensuring ongoing compliance with data reporting, managing permit allocations relative to quota, and addressing potential illegal fishing activities.

The introduction of permit fees in future years may affect participation levels.

Success depends on maintaining strong collaboration between regulators, anglers, and industry groups to sustain Bluefin Tuna populations in UK waters.

Food for Thought

The opening of the Bluefin Tuna catch and release fishery reflects the UK’s dedication to sustainable marine resource management.

By balancing conservation efforts with recreational opportunities, this initiative sets a precedent for responsible fishing practices that could influence international policy dialogues in the future.
