The British Embassy in Manila has unveiled an exciting literary initiative as part of its #GreatBritishStories campaign, featuring a life-sized replica of the iconic British red telephone booth at Fully Booked BGC.

Running from September 28 to October 18, the exhibit celebrates the enduring legacy of British literature, bridging cultural connections between the UK and the Philippines.

A British Cultural Icon Comes to Life

Step into a corner of Britain in Manila as the British Embassy brings the iconic red phone booth to Fully Booked BGC.

This interactive display invites book lovers to explore classic and contemporary British literature, showcasing timeless works from Jane Austen to the witty observations of Dolly Alderton.

With the #GreatBritishStories campaign, the embassy aims to highlight Britain’s rich literary heritage and its universal appeal, especially to Filipino readers.

Laure Beaufils, British Ambassador to the Philippines, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating:

“I’m thrilled to bring a little piece of Britain to the Philippines with our phone booth library. I hope this will generate a lot of excitement for British literature.”

Showcasing British Literary Heritage

This literary phone booth display serves as more than just a nostalgic nod to British culture.

It celebrates a diverse range of authors and genres, encouraging visitors to dive into everything from the wit of Oscar Wilde to the strength of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.

The carefully curated selection of books also highlights a strong emphasis on female writers and characters, showcasing how British literature has evolved while maintaining its global influence.

Jaime Daez, Managing Director of Fully Booked, described the unique collaboration:

“It’s like having a small corner of Britain right here in our store, inviting customers to explore the wide range of storytelling the UK has to offer.”

This interactive exhibit encourages readers to explore British stories and share their favourite reads.

Furthermore, visitors can even leave a voice message in the booth, recommending their most beloved British books, or simply inspire someone else’s next great read.

The Significance of the British Red Phone Booth

The display’s centrepiece—the red phone booth—is not only iconic for its appearance but also celebrates its centennial anniversary this year.

First introduced in 1924, this symbol of British heritage has stood the test of time, much like the literature it now houses.

Here’s a quick look at some of the classic and modern works on display:

Classic Works

Contemporary Titles

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton
Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle On Chapel Sands by Laura Cumming
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll Ordinary People by Diana Evans

This mix of titles ensures that there’s something for everyone, from those looking to revisit timeless classics to readers searching for fresh, contemporary voices in British literature.

Bringing British Literature to Life in Manila

The #GreatBritishStories phone booth exhibit is part of a broader effort by the British Embassy to foster cultural exchange between the UK and the Philippines.

The exhibit encourages visitors to engage with British stories in fun, interactive ways, such as by taking a special quiz or snapping photos inside the booth to share on social media with the hashtag #GreatBritishStories.

But that’s not all—the phone booth library is a precursor to the larger Great British Festival, which will take place at the BGC Amphitheatre from October 19 to 20.

This two-day event will immerse attendees in British culture, from literature and music to food and film. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore the many facets of Britain, right in the heart of Manila.

A Lasting Connection Between Cultures

By bringing the best of British storytelling to the Philippines, the British Embassy hopes to ignite curiosity and foster a deeper appreciation for British literature.

As Ambassador Beaufils put it:

“We’ve got so many authors—classic or modern—to inspire Filipino readers. I hope they take the time to explore and enjoy these stories, and learn more about the UK and the values that Britain holds dear.”

Whether you’re a fan of the determined Elizabeth Bennet, the clever Sherlock Holmes, or the modern reflections of Dolly Alderton, this exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the literary treasures Britain has to offer.

So, head over to Fully Booked BGC, step inside the iconic red booth, and let #GreatBritishStories transport you to a world where every great reader’s journey starts with a single book.
