After years of anguish and uncertainty, Canada welcomed news of the hostages’ release under the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Prime Minister Carney’s statement marked a moment of relief and reflection for families, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to peace, humanitarian leadership, and support for Canadians directly affected by the Middle East conflict.

Relief and Reflection for Canadian Families

Prime Minister Carney’s statement

“The release of hostages is a moment of profound relief. After over two years of suffering, today families are finally reunited. For the Jewish people, this is a moment that holds two truths at once – a grief for what cannot be restored, and a fragile light of what might still be repaired.

As the hostages are returned under the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, Canada extends its gratitude to the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye for their tireless efforts to make this vital progress possible.

We remember all those who were brutally murdered in Hamas’ heinous terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023, including Canadians Vivian Silver, Netta Epstein, Alexandre Look, Judih Weinstein, Shir Georgy, Ben Mizrachi, and Adi Vital-Kaploun, as well as others with close ties to Canada, like Tiferet Lapidot. May their memories be a blessing.

The release of hostages must be a turning point toward lasting peace. We call on all parties to continue implementing the terms of the ceasefire agreement, including maintaining the withdrawal of Israeli troops and allowing sustained humanitarian assistance at scale into and throughout Gaza without delay.

Canada commends President Trump’s essential leadership in advancing a comprehensive peace plan. It is vital that the parties continue to engage constructively to achieve a sustainable and lasting peace agreement, as stipulated in the U.S. plan. This includes establishing transitional governance for Gaza and pursuing a permanent political solution that ensures peaceful coexistence for Israelis and Palestinians. Hamas must disarm and play no role in the future governance of a demilitarised Palestinian state.

Since October 2023, Canada has committed over $400 million in humanitarian and development assistance to address the crises in Palestine. We continue to support the sustained, large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid and are intensifying coordination with international partners to build a just and lasting peace in the Middle East – a peace that can only be guaranteed through a two-state solution.”

Canada’s Diplomatic Leadership and Global Partnerships

In his address, Carney commended the tireless diplomatic work of the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye for facilitating the ceasefire and securing the hostages’ release. The Prime Minister highlighted President Trump’s leadership, calling it “essential in advancing a comprehensive peace plan.” Canada’s praise underscores its strong alliance with key global partners and its consistent stance on supporting constructive diplomacy.

This cooperation reflects a broader shift toward collective peacebuilding. Canada continues to advocate for transitional governance in Gaza and supports disarmament efforts to ensure that Hamas plays no role in future governance. The long-term goal, as stated in Carney’s remarks, remains a sustainable two-state solution built on security, coexistence, and mutual recognition.

Humanitarian Commitment and Ongoing Aid

Canada’s humanitarian response to the Gaza crisis has been both generous and consistent. Since October 2023, the government has committed over $400 million in aid to support Palestinians affected by conflict. This financial support spans emergency medical care, food distribution, infrastructure rebuilding, and mental health assistance through global partners such as the United Nations and the Red Cross.

Canada’s Humanitarian Support to Palestine (2023–2025)
• $355 million for emergency response and relief programs
• $30 million announced in July 2025 for additional Gaza recovery efforts
• $10 million through the World Bank for Palestinian Authority infrastructure
• Canadian Armed Forces air-drops delivering 21,600 pounds of aid in August 2025

These figures illustrate Canada’s deep and ongoing engagement in humanitarian relief. The aid has strengthened vital supply lines and provided life-saving resources to thousands of civilians across Gaza. Canada’s proactive role reinforces its image as a nation that prioritizes compassion, fairness, and global responsibility.

Economic and Strategic Stakes for Canadians

While primarily a humanitarian story, the Gaza conflict also carries significant economic implications for Canadians. Peace in the Middle East contributes to global stability, influencing oil and gas markets, trade routes, and shipping costs that directly affect Canadian households and businesses. By investing in long-term peace, Canada safeguards not only its moral standing but also its economic resilience.

Beyond the financial impact, Canada’s role in stabilizing regional relations supports its broader foreign policy objectives. The government’s efforts help secure international cooperation, enhance diplomatic influence, and protect Canadian interests in a volatile global environment.

Canada’s Vision for Lasting Peace

Prime Minister Carney’s statement was not merely a reflection on past suffering — it was also a call to action. He urged all parties to fully implement the ceasefire terms, maintain the withdrawal of Israeli troops, and enable sustained humanitarian assistance “at scale and without delay.” The Prime Minister emphasized that these steps are crucial for ensuring the ceasefire leads to a permanent peace, not just a pause in violence.

Carney’s vision resonates with Canadian values that prioritise justice, compassion, and stability. It also reflects the belief that peace is inseparable from accountability and governance. His government continues to work with partners to support diplomatic frameworks that promote reconciliation and prevent future escalation.

Priorities Moving Forward

  • Maintain humanitarian access and aid delivery throughout Gaza
  • Support demilitarisation and stable transitional governance structures
  • Encourage sustained international dialogue for a two-state solution
  • Protect Canadians abroad and honour victims of the conflict

These objectives form the backbone of Canada’s evolving foreign policy in the region, representing both practical action and moral conviction.

A Moment of Hope Amid Grief

For many Canadians, the release of the hostages offers a fragile but powerful symbol of progress. The moment reflects not only relief for the families involved but also hope for the broader international community. It demonstrates that diplomacy, when backed by persistence and partnership, can achieve outcomes once thought impossible.

Prime Minister Carney’s message ultimately reminds Canadians of their country’s enduring role in global peace efforts — a reminder that compassion and commitment remain Canada’s most valuable exports. As the nation continues to advocate for peace and reconciliation, Canadians can take pride in knowing that their values resonate on the world stage, guiding a path from grief toward healing.
