Minister Ahmed Hussen Allocates $37.9M to Global Projects Supporting Equality

A more just and equitable world doesn’t happen by chance—it takes action. On Zero Discrimination Day, Canada reaffirmed its commitment to human rights by investing in real change.

The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, announced $37.9 million in funding for five initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic governance and advancing human rights in disadvantaged regions.

This funding, aligned with Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy, will support projects focusing on gender equality, legal protection, and empowerment of marginalized groups. It also reinforces Canada’s role in global advocacy, working in partnership with Canadian institutions and international organizations.

Why This Announcement Matters

This initiative comes at a critical time. According to global reports, nearly two-thirds of the world’s population lacks access to fundamental legal protections. By providing targeted funding, Canada is helping close these gaps, ensuring justice and equality for all.

Objectives of the Funded Projects:

  • Strengthen democratic governance in developing countries.
  • Promote gender equality and legal empowerment for marginalized groups.
  • Enhance human rights education and legal literacy.
  • Foster collaboration between Canadian institutions and international partners to implement effective policies.

The Five Projects Receiving Funding

The $37.9 million investment will be distributed across five major initiatives led by Canadian organizations known for their expertise in human rights and governance.

These projects will be implemented through collaboration with local governments, civil society groups, and justice experts in countries eligible for official development assistance.

Organization Project Name Focus Points
Equitas The Power of Equality Human rights education & advocacy
Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Technical Assistance Partnership Strengthening democratic institutions
Justice Canada Technical Assistance Partnership Legal reforms & access to justice
Lawyers Without Borders Canada Access to Rights in the Caribbean Equality, non-discrimination & citizenship
Manitoba Council for International Cooperation Fund for Innovation and Transformation Community-led human rights initiatives

Each of these projects reflects Canada’s long-standing belief in fairness, inclusion, and social justice—values deeply ingrained in the country’s cultural fabric.

Canada’s Leadership in Human Rights Advocacy

Canada has long been a leader in promoting human rights worldwide. This latest funding aligns with its broader international commitments, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5 & SDG 16).

Reasons Canada’s Involvement is Vital:

A Global Responsibility: With billions lacking legal protections, Canada’s funding provides essential support where it’s needed most.

Promoting Stability: Strengthening democratic governance reduces conflict and fosters economic growth.

Gender Equality as a Priority: These projects address systemic inequalities, giving women and marginalized communities better access to legal rights.

Long-Term Impact: By investing in education, legal reform, and human rights training, Canada ensures sustainable change.

This commitment underscores the government’s dedication to building a world where fairness and equality aren’t privileges, but universal rights.

Why Announce This on Zero Discrimination Day?

Timing matters. March 1st marks Zero Discrimination Day, a global movement advocating for equal opportunities and rights for all. Announcing this funding on this day reinforces Canada’s message: discrimination has no place in a just society.

By making this commitment on a day dedicated to inclusion, Canada sends a strong signal that it stands with those fighting for equality worldwide.

A Step Toward a More Equitable World

Investing in human rights isn’t just about policy—it’s about people. These projects will empower communities, protect fundamental freedoms, and create lasting change.

With this funding, Canada continues its legacy of standing up for justice, democracy, and equality, proving that real progress starts with action.
