Brownsville officers intercept Kansas man wanted for child-related felony charges during vehicle inspection at U.S.-Mexico crossing.

Fugitive with Felony Child Abuse Warrant Arrested at Brownsville Border

A routine vehicle inspection at the Brownsville Port of Entry led to the arrest of a fugitive wanted on two counts of indecent liberties with a child.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers intercepted the man while processing cross-border entries at the Gateway International Bridge on April 18, underscoring the agency’s role in national security and law enforcement collaboration.

Border Security in Action: April 18 Arrest

U.S. citizen Mark Anthony Renteria, 25, was driving a 2016 GMC when he sought reentry into the United States at the Brownsville port. During standard processing, CBP officers referred him for secondary inspection.

The additional screening revealed that Renteria had an active felony warrant issued by the Saline County Sheriff’s Office in Salina, Kansas, for two charges involving indecent liberties with a child.

After confirming the warrant through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), officers transferred him to the custody of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office for further legal action.

“The apprehensions of persons wanted in connection with alleged felony sexual offenses involving children are among the most heinous of crimes that we encounter,”

said Tater Ortiz, Port Director, Brownsville Port of Entry.

Coordinated Crime Prevention at the Border

The arrest demonstrates how NCIC integration empowers frontline officers to screen individuals against a national database of felony warrants.

This centralized tool supports swift, secure decisions, particularly at high-traffic entry points like Brownsville.

Notable CBP Warrant Apprehensions in Recent Years

Year Offense Type Arrest Location Suspect Nationality
2021 Homicide San Ysidro, CA U.S. Citizen
2022 Money Laundering Laredo, TX Mexican National
2023 Sexual Child Abuse El Paso, TX U.S. Citizen
2024 Narcotics Distribution Nogales, AZ U.S. Citizen
2025 Indecent Liberties w/ Child Brownsville, TX U.S. Citizen
  • NCIC alerts assist in daily apprehensions.

  • CBP screens tens of thousands at land, air, and sea ports daily.

CBP’s Role in Public Safety

CBP officers serve as both border protectors and first-line responders in fugitive apprehensions. Their access to NCIC allows for real-time warrant identification, turning routine entry attempts into significant law enforcement actions. With Brownsville being a major entry hub, the role of these officers is especially critical.

The agency routinely collaborates with local law enforcement to ensure that individuals wanted for serious crimes—including child exploitation, drug trafficking, and financial fraud—are identified and processed according to legal standards.

Legal Note: Criminal charges are considered allegations until proven in a court of law. All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until convicted.
