A wrong turn onto Buffalo’s Peace Bridge led to the arrest of Naxer Acevedo Escalona, a 32-year-old Venezuelan national, driving a stolen vehicle. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers identified the car and discovered Escalona was wanted for armed robbery in Colorado.

The swift coordination between federal and local law enforcement resulted in his arrest and pending extradition.

A Wrong Turn Leads to Arrest

On a routine day at the Peace Bridge border crossing in Buffalo, N.Y., CBP officers conducted a primary inspection on a 2016 Nissan Altima after the driver made an unintended turn onto the bridge.

What seemed like a minor navigational error quickly escalated when officers ran the vehicle’s information through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. The results were alarming: the car had been reported stolen by the Chicago Police Department.

CBP immediately moved the vehicle and its occupants to a secondary inspection area for further investigation. During this process, officers verified Escalona’s identity and confirmed he had multiple active felony warrants in Colorado.

Federal and Local Cooperation Ensures Arrest

The discovery of Escalona’s outstanding felony warrants—issued for armed robbery and vehicle theft—prompted CBP to notify the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado. After verification, authorities took Escalona into custody.

Federal and local law enforcement agencies worked together seamlessly to transfer him to the Buffalo Police Department, which is currently holding him as a fugitive from justice pending extradition.

CBP’s Role in Law Enforcement:

  • Identification of stolen vehicles at border crossings.
  • Coordination with state and local authorities for criminal apprehension.

According to Area Port Director Gaetano Cordone,

“Thanks to the outstanding work of our CBP officers, another criminal was removed from our streets.”

This sentiment underscores the CBP’s commitment to maintaining border security and public safety.

A Pattern of Success in Stopping Criminals at the Border

The Peace Bridge arrest is not an isolated incident. CBP officers consistently intercept stolen vehicles and apprehend suspects at various U.S. border crossings, showcasing their vigilance and commitment to public safety.

Recent Notable Incidents:

  • October 2024: A stolen Chevrolet Astro van carrying a loaded Ruger rifle was intercepted at the Champlain Port of Entry.
  • August 2024: A 19-year-old driving a stolen vehicle attempted to use a fake identity at the Peace Bridge crossing.
  • November 2023: Officers at the Peace Bridge recovered a stolen Mercedes Benz valued at $50,000.

Ensuring Safer Borders Through Vigilance

The CBP’s proactive measures in monitoring and intercepting stolen vehicles at border crossings highlight the ongoing efforts to strengthen national security.

Each arrest not only removes dangerous individuals from communities but also deters future crimes by demonstrating the thoroughness of border inspections.

CBP officers, through their diligence and quick response, continue to protect U.S. borders from illegal activities. Escalona’s arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of these efforts in safeguarding both local and national communities.

The Takeaway

The collaboration between federal agencies and local law enforcement is a cornerstone of these successful operations. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) plays a crucial role in identifying and halting criminal activities at border crossings, which remain a primary point of entry for many individuals.

Through sustained vigilance, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is ensuring safer communities while upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders.
