A Call for Ceasefire and Peace

On Sunday, 14 July, Foreign Secretary David Lammy arrived in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories on his first official visit to the Middle East since assuming his role.

The visit aims to advance diplomatic efforts to halt the ongoing violence in Gaza and pave the way for a sustainable peace process.

Focus of the Visit

Diplomatic Engagements

David Lammy is set to hold high-level discussions with key leaders in Israel and the Palestinian territories. In Israel, he will meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Herzog to stress the importance of ending the conflict and securing the release of hostages.

In the Occupied Palestinian Territories, he will engage with President Abbas and Prime Minister Mustafa to reiterate the UK’s support for their commitment to reform and the pursuit of a two-state solution.

Humanitarian Efforts

The Foreign Secretary’s visit also brings attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He announced an additional £5.5 million in funding to UK-Med, a frontline medical aid charity.

This funding will support the ongoing efforts of field hospitals and the emergency department at Nasser Hospital, providing life-saving care to thousands of patients suffering from acute respiratory illnesses, infections, and explosive fragmentation trauma.

Statement on the Crisis

“The death and destruction in Gaza is intolerable. This war must end now, with an immediate ceasefire, complied with by both sides,”

stated David Lammy.

He emphasized the necessity for the fighting to cease, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and unrestricted aid access to the people of Gaza.

Lammy’s strong words underscore the UK’s commitment to playing a full diplomatic role in achieving a ceasefire and creating a credible pathway towards a two-state solution.

International Support

The UK’s call for a ceasefire has garnered international backing. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has discussed the ceasefire with Lammy, signaling a unified diplomatic effort.

Civil society organizations have also shown support, with a joint letter to the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

The UK has been proactive in providing aid to the region, with more than 680 tonnes of aid, including medicines, shelters, and hygiene kits, awaiting entry into Gaza.

The funding to the Palestinian Authority, amounting to £10 million this financial year, supports key services such as the payment of salaries for 8,200 doctors, nurses, and other health workers over two months.

Long-term Vision for Peace

Lammy’s visit underscores the UK’s vision for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, advocating for a two-state solution with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.

He calls for an end to the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements and rising settler violence in the West Bank, stressing the importance of a reformed and empowered Palestinian Authority.

The Final Word

Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza highlights the UK’s proactive stance in addressing the conflict.

His visit to the Middle East aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and provide crucial humanitarian aid, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to long-term peace and security in the region.

With international support and a clear vision for a two-state solution, the UK’s efforts signal a significant step towards ending the violence and fostering a sustainable peace process.
