Inaugurating a Platform for Young Scientific Minds

Global Young Scientists Summit: A Convergence of Innovators

Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, Heng Swee Keat, opened the 12th edition of the Global Young Scientists Summit with a warm welcome to over 350 young scientists from 35 countries. Subsequently, this Summit serves as a unique platform for young researchers to interact with and learn from distinguished leaders in science, thereby fostering a global exchange of ideas and innovations.

A Gathering of Eminent Scientists

Celebrating Excellence in Research and Innovation

This year’s summit, organized by the National Research Foundation, features 16 eminent scientists, including Nobel laureates and other distinguished award winners. Their presence provides young scientists with an invaluable opportunity for inspiration and mentorship. Heng emphasized the significance of such interactions in sparking new ideas and advancing scientific frontiers.

The Power of Persistence in Science

Highlighting the Journey of Nobel Laureate Professor Katalin Karikó

In his address, DPM Heng shared the story of Professor Katalin Karikó, the 2023 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine, to illustrate the perseverance required in scientific endeavors. Despite facing setbacks, Professor Karikó’s dedication to mRNA research paved the way for breakthroughs that have had a global impact, particularly in developing mRNA vaccines.

Nurturing Scientific Talent

Singapore’s Commitment to Supporting Aspiring Scientists

DPM Heng stressed the need for patience in nurturing scientific talent, highlighting Singapore’s initiatives in this regard. From implementing STEM programs in schools to offering scholarships and research opportunities, Singapore actively supports the growth of aspiring scientists.

Moreover, complementing this approach, the nation has dedicated S$25 billion to research, innovation, and enterprise from 2021 to 2025, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustained funding for basic research.

Building a Supportive Ecosystem

Fostering Collaboration and Community Building

The importance of a supportive structure and ecosystem for scientists to thrive was emphasized. Additionally, community building, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and industry partnerships are crucial elements. Singapore, through various schemes and initiatives like the National Research Foundation Fellowship and CREATE, actively provides platforms for scientists to connect and collaborate on a global scale.

The Role of Young Scientists

Embracing Collaboration and Open-Mindedness

DPM Heng encouraged the young scientists to maintain a collaborative and open-minded outlook, taking full advantage of the Summit to form connections and friendships. He also advised them to explore opportunities beyond academia, such as industry collaborations, to make their research more impactful.

Addressing Global Challenges Through Science

Investing in Research for a Sustainable Future

The Summit also highlights the importance of science in addressing global challenges like pandemics, climate change, and renewable energy. Breakthroughs in these areas are crucial for a healthier and more sustainable future.

Closing Remarks

A Call for Continued Engagement and Growth

In conclusion, DPM Heng underscored the importance of nurturing scientific talent and building robust ecosystems, coupled with the young scientists’ perseverance and collaborative spirit. He expressed hope that Singapore would play a part in their scientific journeys and wished all participants a fruitful and enriching Summit.
