Nearly 1,500 soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as “The Old Guard,” participated in the 77th annual “Flags In” ceremony on May 22, 2025, at Arlington National Cemetery.

They placed over 260,000 U.S. flags at headstones and niche columns to honor fallen service members, marking the start of Memorial Day observances.

About the Flags Ceremony

The “Flags In” ceremony is a solemn tradition that underscores the nation’s commitment to remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the United States.

Conducted by The Old Guard since 1948, this event symbolizes national remembrance and respect for U.S. military personnel who died in service.

Army Staff Sgt. Jacob Holmes, public affairs team leader for The Old Guard, emphasized the importance of this tradition.

For those who gave everything in service to our country, this is our way of showing that they will never be forgotten.
