Australia is making a significant move to strengthen its naval capabilities with the development of a Defence Precinct at Henderson, Western Australia.

This project is set to revolutionize continuous naval shipbuilding and nuclear-powered submarine maintenance, creating thousands of local jobs and investing tens of billions of dollars over the next two decades.

A Strategic Move for Australia’s Defence Industry

The announcement by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government highlights the strategic importance of Henderson in Western Australia’s naval infrastructure.

As part of this initiative, the Henderson Defence Precinct will serve as a consolidated, Commonwealth-owned site to support continuous shipbuilding and maintenance operations for the Royal Australian Navy.

This move not only strengthens Australia’s maritime defence but also emphasizes the country’s commitment to developing a sustainable defence industry.

Investing in Shipbuilding and Submarine Maintenance

The Defence Precinct at Henderson will play a pivotal role in Australia’s naval shipbuilding strategy. It will facilitate the construction of new landing craft for the Australian Army and general purpose frigates for the Navy.

Australia will equip the precinct to provide depot-level maintenance for its future nuclear-powered submarines, a capability crucial to the AUKUS pathway for defence cooperation between Australia, the UK, and the US.

By centralizing these operations, the precinct aims to optimize Australia’s shipbuilding and sustainment capabilities. This consolidated approach ensures that essential infrastructure and resources are available for both current and future projects, safeguarding national security while boosting local industries.

The Economic Impact: Jobs and Investments

Establishing the Henderson Defence Precinct is not just a military move—it’s an economic powerhouse for Western Australia. The Albanese government estimates that around 10,000 high-skilled jobs will be created through this project.

Economic Benefits:

  • Thousands of jobs created in shipbuilding, maintenance, and related sectors.
  • A multi-billion-dollar investment over the next two decades.

These jobs will be supported by the construction of new facilities and the deployment of the latest technologies required to build and maintain naval vessels.

Furthermore, the precinct will become a hub for depot-level maintenance and contingency docking for nuclear-powered submarines. Alone, these maintenance capabilities are projected to create around 3,000 jobs.

Strengthening Australia’s Defence Capabilities

The importance of Henderson extends beyond its economic benefits. As Prime Minister Albanese stated, this development represents the most consequential defence investment in Western Australia in nearly four decades. The collaboration between the Albanese and Cook governments ensures that both Federal and State levels work closely to deliver critical defence capabilities effectively.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles further emphasized the precinct’s role in developing Australia’s two-ocean navy strategy, with Henderson playing a crucial part as Australia builds and sustains its naval power in the Indian Ocean.

The Future of the Defence Precinct

To ensure the success of this long-term project, the Albanese government has committed an initial $127 million over three years for planning, consultations, and feasibility studies.

These efforts will include the establishment of common user facilities to support local industry and workforce training programs aimed at developing the skills necessary for the precinct’s continuous operation.

Additionally, the Cooperation Agreement signed between the Commonwealth and the Western Australian Government sets the groundwork for effective collaboration.

The agreement outlines the development of a dedicated joint forum that will focus on training and workforce development, ensuring a steady stream of skilled personnel to support the precinct’s projects.

A Defence Future Made in Australia

The new Defence Precinct at Henderson is a game-changing initiative for Australia’s defence capabilities and the Western Australian economy. It represents a long-term commitment to developing a self-sustaining naval industry that supports national security while providing generational opportunities for Australians.

As Australia continues to advance its defence capabilities, the Henderson Defence Precinct will be at the forefront, delivering both the strategic and economic benefits needed to keep the nation safe and secure.

With a focus on jobs, innovation, and local investment, the precinct sets a promising course for the future of naval shipbuilding and submarine maintenance in Australia.
