Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, announced a groundbreaking investment in national sports during a press conference at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Joined by Kieren Perkins, CEO of the Australian Sports Commission, and Anika Wells, Minister for Sports, the Prime Minister unveiled a significant funding package aimed at supporting elite athletes, coaches, and support staff.

Major Funding Announcement

Kieren Perkins began the conference by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land and paying tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contributions to sport.

He highlighted the historic nature of the funding, emphasizing its impact on Australian athletes’ preparation for upcoming events, including the Paris 2024 Olympics and the Brisbane 2032 Games.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese detailed the funding specifics, announcing a $283 million investment over the next two years. This amount represents a 50% increase in high-performance funding compared to previous government contributions.

The funding will support athletes’ training and competition, aiming to inspire national pride and promote a healthy lifestyle among Australians.

Benefits of Increased Sports Funding

The new funding package includes:

  • Support for Elite Athletes: Significant financial assistance for athletes preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the Brisbane 2032 Games.
  • Investment in Facilities: An additional $250 million for the Australian Institute of Sport, ensuring world-class training environments.
  • Paralympic Sports: Doubling the funding for Paralympic athletes, addressing long-standing disparities between able-bodied and para-sports funding.
  • Direct Athlete Support Grants: Over $17 million dedicated to assisting athletes with living costs, enabling them to focus on training and competition.

Impact on Australian Sports

Minister for Sports, Anika Wells, emphasized the transformative nature of this funding. She noted the government’s commitment to addressing funding imbalances and highlighted the boost in support for para-sports.

This increased investment is expected to foster the development of future champions and ensure equitable support for all athletes.

Ian Chesterman, President of the Australian Olympic Committee, praised the funding boost, acknowledging its critical timing ahead of the Paris Olympics. He stressed the importance of robust support systems for athletes and the positive ripple effects on community sports across Australia.

Alison Creigh, Chair of Paralympics Australia, celebrated the visionary leadership and collaboration that led to this unprecedented funding. She underscored the long-term benefits for para-sports and the broader Australian sports ecosystem.
