The IRS has unveiled significant enhancements to its Business Tax Account (BTA) platform, allowing broader access for corporate Designated Officials (DOs) and sole proprietors.

These changes aim to simplify tax management and improve digital access to essential tools. Whether you’re overseeing a C corporation or operating as a sole proprietor, here’s what you need to know about these updates and how they can benefit your business.

Enhanced Access for Designated Officials and Sole Proprietors

The IRS now permits Designated Officials of C corporations and S corporations to access the BTA platform. A DO is an employee legally authorized to bind the corporation, such as a President, CEO, or Treasurer. Sole proprietors can also use the Income Verification Express Service (IVES) to streamline income verification.

Features Now Available to DOs:

  • View and pay corporate tax balances.
  • Approve or reject tax transcript requests via IVES.
  • Access transcripts and payment histories in both English and Spanish.

What is the Income Verification Express Service?

The IVES program is a game-changer for both borrowers and lenders. It simplifies the process of verifying income for loans by giving lenders access to tax transcripts, provided the taxpayer authorizes it. This means faster mortgage approvals and fewer delays.

Main Benefits of IVES:

  • Allows taxpayers to approve or reject requests in real time.
  • Helps lenders expedite loan processing.
  • Reduces paperwork for businesses and financial institutions.

Who Qualifies to Use the Business Tax Account?

The IRS has expanded BTA eligibility, making it accessible to more business taxpayers.

To activate an account, you must meet the following criteria:

Eligible Users:

  • Sole Proprietors: Must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN).
  • Corporate DOs: Must hold a qualifying title such as CEO or Treasurer.
  • Partners and Shareholders: Need an SSN or ITIN and a Schedule K-1.

However, single-member LLCs reporting business income on Schedule C are not yet eligible for BTA access.

How to Register as a Designated Official

Getting started with the Business Tax Account as a DO involves a straightforward process.

Follow these steps to ensure access:

Steps to Register:

  1. Gather required tax records, including the corporation’s EIN and recent federal tax returns.
  2. Log in to the corporation’s BTA using an existing or newly created ID.me account.
  3. Request a unique PIN, which will be mailed to the business address within 5-10 days.

Once registered, you’ll need to revalidate your DO status annually to maintain access.

New Features and Future Enhancements

The BTA’s latest updates include a range of new features designed to simplify business tax management. The platform allows users to:

  • View balance due and payment history.
  • Download transcripts and IRS notices.
  • Authorize or deny lender requests via IVES.

Future Improvements:

  • Enhanced access for additional entity types, including tax-exempt organizations.
  • Expanded functionality for managing tax compliance and payments.

Benefits of the Business Tax Account

The BTA offers a seamless and secure way to manage your business’s tax obligations online. By embracing these digital tools, businesses can:

Advantages:

  • Save Time: Access records and approve requests without mailing forms.
  • Stay Organized: View a comprehensive history of payments and tax filings.
  • Enhance Security: Manage sensitive tax information through a secure platform.
