The UK’s unwavering stance on justice and accountability for Daesh victims was brought to the fore during a recent UN Security Council meeting.

Ambassador James Kariuki underscored the UK’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s stability, safeguarding democratic processes, and addressing the lingering impacts of Daesh crimes.

The UK’s Role in Iraq’s Transitional Journey

The UK has long supported Iraq’s efforts to rebuild after years of turmoil, particularly in the face of Daesh atrocities.

During his statement, Ambassador Kariuki highlighted the need for survivors of Daesh crimes to receive justice, emphasizing that accountability remains a cornerstone of reconciliation.

“Survivors and victims of Daesh crimes deserve justice,”

Kariuki declared, reaffirming the UK’s readiness to assist Iraq in achieving this goal.

The UK remains engaged in promoting cooperation between the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the Iraqi government, ensuring the transition process is both smooth and effective.

Daesh Accountability: A Critical Mission

Although UNITAD (United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Daesh) officially closed in September, the mission to secure justice for victims continues. Efforts now focus on enhancing archival support to document and prosecute Daesh crimes. This commitment extends beyond Iraq, encompassing justice in third countries where survivors reside.

UK’s Proposed Solutions:

  • Establishing an enhanced UN archive to preserve evidence of Daesh crimes.
  • Encouraging the Government of Iraq to expedite judicial processes for accountability.
  • Supporting regional stability to prevent future atrocities.

Parliamentary Progress in the Kurdistan Region

The UK welcomed the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and UNAMI’s support in organizing the event. These elections marked an essential step in maintaining the region’s democratic legitimacy.

With the results now certified, the UK urges swift government formation to address pressing local challenges.

“Lessons learned from the KRI elections can inform planning for federal elections scheduled for next year,” said Ambassador Kariuki.

Broader Regional Stability

The UK’s statement also addressed broader regional concerns, including recent escalations in Syria and tensions in Gaza and Lebanon.

Recognizing the potential impact on Iraq and the KRI, the UK called on influential actors to discourage militia activities that could destabilize the region further.

Current Priorities:

  • Ceasefire preservation in Gaza and Lebanon.
  • Discouraging cross-border militia aggression.
  • Promoting diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts.

Challenges and Commitments

The UK’s engagement with Iraq extends to long-standing issues like resolving Kuwait’s missing persons and property files.

Additionally, proposed amendments to Iraq’s Personal Status Law are under review, with the UK stressing the importance of compliance with international obligations.

Developments in Iraq’s Transition:

Federal Elections Preparation Lessons learned in progress Sharing best practices with Iraq

Looking Ahead

The UK’s commitment to Iraq’s stability, democratic development, and justice for Daesh victims remains steadfast. As Iraq navigates its transitional period, the UK will continue working alongside international partners to ensure accountability, support survivors, and promote a stable future for the region.

Through this collaborative approach, the UK aims to not only honour the past but also build a safer and more equitable tomorrow for all Iraqis.
