Every year, thousands of people across the U.S. are injured while using fireworks, many requiring emergency medical care.

As Loudoun County prepares for its 2025 Independence Day festivities, local fire officials are urging residents to celebrate responsibly.

Their message is clear: enjoy the fireworks—but leave them to the professionals whenever possible.

From Ashburn to Purcellville, public shows offer safer alternatives, and officials are working to ensure this year’s celebrations remain festive—and injury-free.

Loudoun County Fireworks Safety Guidance for 2025

According to the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System (LC-CFRS), consumer fireworks should only be purchased from vendors approved by the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Anything labeled with “shoots,” “explodes,” or “flaming” is illegal in Virginia.

Officials remind residents that illegal fireworks not only pose safety hazards but can also lead to Class 1 Misdemeanor charges.

How to Celebrate Responsibly

  • Use fireworks only outdoors and away from structures, brush, or dry vegetation.

  • Keep a water source nearby such as a hose or bucket.

  • Maintain constant adult supervision—never allow children to ignite fireworks.

  • Place fireworks on flat, stable surfaces before lighting.

  • Soak used fireworks in water before disposal.

  • Never try to relight malfunctioning fireworks (“duds”).

Fireworks Can Be Risky—But They Don’t Have to Be

“Fourth of July is a time to celebrate with family and friends, not a visit to the emergency room,”

said Chief Keith Johnson, Loudoun County Fire Chief.

“Public shows are safer, more spectacular, and far more reliable than backyard alternatives.”

Consumer fireworks that are legal in Virginia include sparklers and ground-based fountains.

However, even these burn hot—sparklers reach temperatures over 1,200 degrees. That’s hot enough to ignite clothing or cause severe burns.

Virginia Laws on Fireworks You Need to Know

To help residents stay on the right side of the law, Loudoun officials highlight what’s permitted:

Legal to Use on Private Property:

  • Sparklers

  • Ground-based fountains

  • Approved fireworks from local, licensed stands

Illegal in Virginia:

  • Fireworks that explode, launch into the air, or move laterally

  • Any product with “shoots” or “projectiles” listed on its label

  • Fireworks purchased from out-of-county or unlicensed sources

“Each year, we seize illegal fireworks that could’ve caused fires or serious injury,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Justin McConnell. “Legal doesn’t always mean safe—but illegal is never worth the risk.”

What’s Next for Loudoun County?

As Loudoun County grows, public safety remains a top priority—especially during holidays that involve large gatherings and open flames.

Whether you’re enjoying the show in Ashburn Village or watching sparklers in your backyard, take a moment to consider your neighbors, pets, and veterans who may be sensitive to loud explosions.

Here’s how you can help keep the celebrations enjoyable for everyone:

  • Choose public displays over private use.

  • Celebrate early and wrap up by local quiet hours.

  • Avoid lighting fireworks near animals or homes.

  • Check weather conditions for wind and dryness.

Celebrating Independence Day should create memories—not medical emergencies. With thoughtful choices and community-minded planning, Loudoun residents can enjoy a holiday that’s both dazzling and safe.
