The Paris 2024 Games began with a spectacular opening ceremony, breaking new ground by taking over the city’s iconic heart. Athletes and spectators alike enjoyed an immersive spectacle, featuring global stars like Lady Gaga, Aya Nakamura, and Céline Dion.

For the first time, the ceremony moved beyond the confines of a stadium, parading along the Seine River, and capturing the essence of Parisian charm.

The grand event, conceived by Artistic Director Thomas Jolly, concluded with French sports legends Marie-José Pérec and Teddy Riner igniting the Olympic Cauldron, officially marking the start of the Games.

A Historic Opening in the Heart of Paris

The Olympic Games in Paris have made history by moving the opening ceremony outside the traditional stadium setting, making it accessible to hundreds of thousands of people. The ceremony’s staging along the Seine, with its iconic landmarks as a backdrop, offered a unique 360-degree experience.

Spectators witnessed a blend of artistic performances, cultural tributes, and the traditional parade of athletes, all intertwined in a cohesive narrative.

Thomas Jolly’s vision for the ceremony was to create an open, inclusive event that allowed spectators to feel a part of the action. The athletes, numbering 6,800, were paraded along the Seine, greeted by cheering crowds.

This unprecedented approach not only showcased the beauty of Paris but also symbolized the city’s welcoming spirit.

Star-Studded Performances

The ceremony featured a stellar lineup of performers, each bringing a unique touch to the event. Lady Gaga set the tone with a homage to French cabaret, while Aya Nakamura, accompanied by the Republican Guard, blended contemporary and traditional French music.

The event was a celebration of France’s rich cultural heritage, with performances that highlighted the country’s artistic contributions to the world.

One of the most poignant moments came when Céline Dion, in a highly anticipated comeback, sang “L’Hymne à l’amour” from the Eiffel Tower’s balcony. Her performance paid tribute to the legendary Edith Piaf, bringing an emotional close to the evening’s celebrations.

A New Era of Olympic Ceremony

The Paris 2024 opening ceremony also included symbolic elements that marked a departure from tradition. A rider clad in the Olympic flag galloped along the Seine, embodying the spirit of Olympism and peace.

The ceremony culminated in the lighting of the cauldron, a symbolic gesture carried out by Marie-José Pérec and Teddy Riner. This cauldron, designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, was a ring of fire that ascended into the sky, a nod to the innovative and forward-thinking spirit of these Games.

Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, emphasized the significance of hosting the Games in Paris, highlighting the city’s deep connection to the Olympic movement.

The ceremony concluded with a team relay featuring sports legends such as Rafael Nadal, Nadia Comaneci, Carl Lewis, and Serena Williams, each representing the pinnacle of their respective sports.
