Portland’s Safe Ride Home Program Offers Discounts for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is once again stepping up to ensure the safety of its residents during St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

From March 14 to 17, PBOT will provide discounted taxi, Lyft, and Uber rides as part of its Safe Ride Home program, aiming to curb impaired driving and promote responsible celebrations.

Ensuring Safety During Festive Times

PBOT’s initiative comes in response to alarming statistics: between 2017 and 2021, alcohol and drug impairment contributed to 69% of deadly crashes in Portland.

The Safe Ride Home program offers a proactive solution by providing transportation discounts that encourage residents to leave their cars at home.

Discount Details

  1. Taxi Rides: Up to $20 off with paper coupons available at local festivals.
  2. Lyft Rides: $10 off digital coupon available from March 14.
  3. Uber Rides: $10 off digital coupon available from March 14.

These discounts are valid for rides starting within Portland city limits from 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., ensuring safe travel during peak celebration hours.

What This Means for Residents

  • Access to affordable transportation options during St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Reduced risk of impaired driving incidents.
  • Support for local events promoting responsible behavior.

A Broader Vision for Safety

The Safe Ride Home program aligns with Portland’s Vision Zero initiative, which seeks to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets.

Since its inception in 2017, the program has helped over 3,300 residents celebrate responsibly.
