The British Army has successfully installed over 1,370 solar panels at Larkhill Garrison, marking a significant step in its sustainability efforts under Project Prometheus.

This initiative aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with the UK government’s environmental goals and enhancing energy efficiency across military estates.

Advancing Sustainability in the Military

The installation of solar panels at Larkhill Garrison is a testament to the British Army’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

By generating green energy, this project not only supports the Army’s sustainability goals but also contributes to the UK’s broader environmental targets. The initiative demonstrates how large organizations can play a crucial role in climate change mitigation.

Environmental Benefits

  • Reduces CO2 emissions by 600 tonnes annually
  • Equivalent environmental impact as planting 27,000 trees
  • Surplus energy shared with nearby garrisons
  • Enhances energy efficiency across military estates

Collaborative Efforts and Future Implications

This project is a collaborative effort between the British Army, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), and Aspire Defence Services Ltd.

Such partnerships are essential for achieving sustainability goals while ensuring that new technologies are cost-effective and resilient.

The success of this initiative could inspire similar projects across other government sectors, driving broader changes in public service approaches to environmental challenges.

Sustainability Leadership Quotes

Major General Richard Clements CBE, Director of Basing & Infrastructure and the army’s sustainability champion, said:

“I am delighted to see the successful completion of our latest solar installation project. By increasing green energy supply, we are building a more sustainable, cost-effective army estate that protects both our future capability and the environments in which soldiers live, work and train.”

Barry Ray, DIO Regional Delivery Lead, said:

“It’s fantastic to see the completion of the latest solar panel installation under Project Prometheus, through the Aspire Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and the tireless efforts of the whole team.

We’re happy to be playing our part in the MOD’s efforts to meet the government’s net zero targets and make the Defence estate as sustainable as we can.

The energy generated will help to power the buildings at Larkhill and any extra can be used to meet demand elsewhere on the PFI estate, so the benefit will be widely felt.”

Richard Tindal, Capital Projects Director, Aspire Defence Services Ltd, said:

“We are very pleased to support the army and DIO in this latest stage of the journey towards decarbonising their estate.

Our long-term collaborative relationship has enabled us to work together, identifying the opportunities to support sustainability ambitions as funding becomes available. I look forward to continuing this into the future.”
