With a significant move amid the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the leaders of the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and France have issued a unified statement on the escalating situation in Gaza. On June 6, 2024, they emphasized their backing for President Biden’s comprehensive deal aimed at halting hostilities and promoting lasting peace in the region.

A Call for Immediate Action

The Quad Leaders—Rishi Sunak, Joe Biden, Olaf Scholz, and Emmanuel Macron—have called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Their joint statement underscores the urgent need to end the violence, release hostages, and significantly increase humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of civilians.

Key Elements of the Statement

  • Immediate Ceasefire and Hostage Release: The leaders stress the necessity of an immediate halt to all hostilities and the release of all hostages.
  • Humanitarian Assistance: A substantial increase in humanitarian aid is essential, including the provision of temporary shelters, medical facilities, and food supplies.
  • Infrastructure Rehabilitation: Immediate refurbishment of essential services such as electricity, water, and medical facilities is crucial for stabilizing the region.

Support for Long-term Solutions

The statement not only addresses the immediate crisis but also emphasizes long-term solutions. The leaders reaffirm their commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Commitment to Israel’s Security

Reiterating their unwavering support for Israel’s security, the Quad Leaders call for Hamas to fully accept the proposed comprehensive deal. They emphasize that this proposal, agreed upon by Israel, should be implemented without delay to bring an enduring end to the conflict.

Backing the Palestinian Authority

The leaders also expressed strong support for the Palestinian Authority and Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa’s reform program. They call for increased regional and international backing for the Palestinian government, including the transfer of revenues by Israel.

Restoring Governance in Gaza

A significant part of the leaders’ statement focuses on the need to restore legitimate Palestinian governance in Gaza. This requires appropriate international support and addresses Israel’s security concerns. The leaders commit to contributing to international stabilization efforts in Gaza, aiming for long-term regional security and preventing future crises.
