From Humble Beginnings to Olympic Glory

South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, gaining independence in 2011. The South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) was established that same year and became a member of FIBA in 2013.

The team’s journey to the Olympics began in earnest when they played their first official game in 2017.

They qualified for the 2024 Olympics by finishing 17th in their debut at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, where they were the highest-placed African team.

Key Players and Leadership

The Bright Stars feature standout players like Carlik Jones and Wenyen Gabriel, both with NBA experience. Jones has been particularly impressive, ranking eighth in scoring and leading in assists at the World Cup. The team is coached by former NBA player Royal Ivey, with Luol Deng, a former NBA star and current president of the SSBF, playing a crucial role in the team’s development.

Significant Contributors to the Team:

  • Carlik Jones: Scored 19 points in the historic Olympic win.
  • Wenyen Gabriel: Provides valuable experience and leadership.

Deng’s leadership has been pivotal, utilizing his connections and vision to guide the federation’s rapid growth.

A Symbol of Hope and Unity

This victory is not just a sports achievement but a symbol of hope and unity for South Sudan. The nation has faced significant challenges, including civil strife and poverty.

The success of the basketball team has inspired many within the country and across Africa. The Bright Stars’ participation in the Olympics represents the potential and resilience of South Sudanese athletes.

Looking Forward

South Sudan’s team is placed in Group C at the Olympics, where they will face tough competitors, including the USA and Serbia. Despite the formidable challenge, the team remains committed to competing at the highest level and continuing their journey of making history.

The rapid rise of the SSBF since its inception is a testament to the dedication and talent within the organization. Key factors contributing to their growth include:

  • Grassroots Development: The SSBF, along with Deng’s foundation, has invested in youth basketball since 2005.
  • International Partnerships: Collaborations with NBA Africa and Stanbic Bank have supported initiatives like the Jr. NBA League in South Sudan.
  • Talent Recruitment: The federation has successfully recruited talented players of South Sudanese descent from around the world.

The Bright Stars’ Impact on National Pride

Basketball has become a unifying force in South Sudan, bringing the nation together and offering a positive narrative amid the country’s challenges. The Bright Stars’ success is a source of national pride and has inspired a new generation of athletes.

Closing the Loop

South Sudan’s first Olympic win in basketball is a monumental achievement, showcasing the nation’s resilience and potential.

With strong leadership and a growing talent pool, the Bright Stars will make a lasting impact on the international stage.

This victory is more than a game—it’s a symbol of hope and unity for a young nation looking to the future with optimism.
