The Ministry of Defence has welcomed a Swedish-led agreement to supply Ukraine with Gripen fighter aircraft, including 16 donated jets and 20 additional aircraft financed through an EU-backed loan. More than 5,000 UK defence industry jobs are expected to be supported through British manufacturing involvement in the programme.

The agreement was announced on 28 May 2026 by the Ministry of Defence alongside Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard MP. The package is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s air combat capability as the conflict with Russia continues.

The Gripen aircraft programme involves industrial cooperation between Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. British firms are expected to contribute major aircraft systems and manufacturing support through facilities located across the UK defence sector.

Sweden Brokers New Fighter Jet Package For Ukraine

Sweden’s agreement will provide Ukraine with 16 urgently gifted Gripen fighter aircraft while supporting the future acquisition of 20 additional jets through an EU support loan. Ukrainian forces are expected to use the aircraft to improve multirole combat operations and strengthen interoperability with NATO allies.

The aircraft are intended to improve Ukraine’s multirole air combat capability and interoperability with NATO operational systems. The programme expands military coordination and aircraft integration activity between NATO-aligned defence partners.

  • Gifted Aircraft: Sweden will urgently transfer 16 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.
  • Future Procurement: Ukraine will acquire 20 additional aircraft through EU-backed financing support.

UK Manufacturing Role In Gripen Production

British industry will contribute critical systems and manufacturing capability to the Gripen programme through a network of defence companies across the country. More than 30 per cent of each aircraft is manufactured in the United Kingdom.

At least 50 UK-based companies are expected to support the programme, including Saab UK in Fareham and Leonardo UK in Edinburgh. The agreement is projected to support more than 5,000 jobs across the British defence and aerospace sector.

  • Industrial Contribution: UK firms will provide components including radar systems and landing gear.
  • Employment Impact: More than 5,000 British defence industry jobs are linked to the programme.

NATO Interoperability And Defence Cooperation

The Gripen aircraft package is intended to improve Ukraine’s ability to operate alongside NATO allies through compatible defence systems and operational standards. NATO air policing cooperation between the UK and Sweden has expanded since Sweden joined the alliance.

Last summer, Swedish Gripen aircraft deployed to Poland alongside the Royal Air Force as part of NATO air policing operations. The UK and Sweden continue to cooperate through NATO membership and the Joint Expeditionary Force framework.

Wider Military Support For Ukraine

The United Kingdom continues to provide military support to Ukraine through equipment deliveries, training operations and defence coordination with allies. The government stated that 120,000 drones will be supplied to Ukraine during 2026.

Combined military support from the UK and Sweden since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 now totals £11.4 billion. Both governments continue to coordinate defence assistance through NATO and wider European security partnerships.

Ministerial Comments

Sir Keir Starmer, Prime Minister said;

“This deal shows what British industry can achieve on the world stage – supporting thousands of jobs from Yeovil to Edinburgh while helping to deliver the air power Ukraine needs to defend itself against Russia’s illegal invasion.

“By standing with our allies and backing Ukraine, we are securing real benefits for British workers and businesses. This is our international partnerships working for Britain.”

Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry said;

“As the fierce resistance of the Ukrainians continues, and as Russian aggression grows, the UK will not waver. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and our NATO Allies like Sweden, bringing the combined power of our industries to bear to support the fight against Putin’s illegal war.”

“This deal is both a big boost for Ukraine’s air power and a show of confidence in our world-leading UK defence industry, supporting thousands of good British jobs here at home. This is the UK stepping up as one for Ukraine: our government, our military and our industry.”

UK-Sweden Industrial Coordination

The Gripen programme also expands existing industrial coordination between British and Swedish defence manufacturers involved in aircraft systems, production support and defence integration activity. Saab UK is investing £100 million into its Fareham operations while BAE Systems continues manufacturing activity linked to its Swedish subsidiaries BAE Bofors and BAE Hägglunds.

The programme increases UK participation in fighter aircraft manufacturing, systems integration and defence supply-chain activity connected to ongoing military support for Ukraine.

The fighter jet agreement between Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ukraine expands military cooperation between NATO partners while strengthening Ukraine’s future air combat capability. British defence manufacturers are expected to play a major role in aircraft production and systems integration under the programme. The programme also expands UK-Sweden defence coordination involving aircraft manufacturing, operational integration and military support activity linked to Ukraine.
