The Prime Minister has appointed five new trustees to the Tate, including Nick Clarry, Sir Isaac Julien CBE, Jack Kirkland, June Sarpong OBE, and Tim Richards CBE.

Starting in 2025, these appointments aim to enhance the Tate’s strategic direction and governance, reflecting a commitment to diversity and inclusion that will impact exhibitions and programs across the UK.

 

Diverse Expertise Enhances Governance

The newly appointed trustees bring a wealth of diverse expertise to the Tate’s Board. With backgrounds spanning arts, entertainment, business, and philanthropy, they are well-positioned to guide the institution towards innovative cultural offerings.

This diversity is expected to enrich the Tate’s governance by incorporating varied perspectives into decision-making processes.

 

Public Engagement and Cultural Changes

As guardians of public interest, these trustees will oversee significant acquisitions and resource allocations at the Tate. Their role is crucial in ensuring that the institution remains a leading cultural entity in the UK.

By prioritizing community engagement and inclusivity, they aim to make art accessible to a broader audience while fostering cultural appreciation.

 

Top Jobs

Nick Clarry

He works as a managing partner for the international private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, which is listed on EuroNext. Nick, who is headquartered in London and joined CVC in 2003, is in charge of investments in sports, media, and entertainment.

In addition to serving on the CVC Foundation Philanthropy Committee, Nick has worked over the past 20 years to support several London-based organizations, such as the Courtauld Institute, the British Film Institute, and The Old Vic.

Since 2014, Nick has been the Chair of The Old Vic Theatre, one of the top non-profit theatres in the UK that works in the community, education, and arts. Nick graduated from the University of Cambridge with an MA in Economics.

 

Sir Isaac Julien CBE RA

Sir Isaac is a well-known British artist and director. Together with Arts Professor Mark Nash, Julien is a Distinguished Professor of the Arts at the University of California Santa Cruz, where he joined the faculty in 2018.

He has been making films and producing film installations for over forty years, including: Once Again… (Statues Never Die) (2022), Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement (2019), Lessons of the Hour – Frederick Douglass (2019), Playtime (2014), Ten Thousand Waves (2010), Western Union: small boats (2007), True North (2004), Baltimore (2003), Paradise Omeros (2002), and Vagabondia (2000).

Current and recent international solo exhibitions include: Lessons of the Hour, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2024; What Freedom is to Me, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, 2024; K21, Dusseldorf, 2023; Tate Britain, London, 2023; Lina Bo Bardi, A Marvellous Entanglement, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 2023; Once Again… (Statues Never Die), Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, 2022.

Julien received the Kaiserring Goslar Award in 2022 and the Royal Academy of Arts’ Charles Wollaston Award in 2017. He received a Knighthood in 2022 for his contributions to artistic diversity and inclusivity.
