In honour of International Security Officers’ Day, the UK’s private security industry regulator, the Security Industry Authority (SIA), is calling on everyone to show their appreciation to security operatives. This annual event, held on 24 July, is an opportunity to acknowledge the vital role these professionals play in maintaining public safety and security.

Celebrating 20 Years of SIA Licensing

At a special reception held on 22 July 2024 at the House of Lords, the SIA celebrated 20 years of licensing. This event was sponsored by The Baroness Meacher, the first Chair of the SIA, and attended by front-line licence holders nominated for their outstanding contributions to the industry.

Inspiring Stories from the Front Line

Two notable attendees, Jamie Mcmullen and Claire Devitt, exemplify the dedication and bravery of security operatives:

  • Jamie Mcmullen: A door supervisor from Merseyside, now working for Network Rail. He saved a teenager with special educational needs and disabilities from serious harm after the boy fell onto the tracks at Liverpool Central station. Jamie’s former employer, Carlisle Support Services, commended his quick reactions in halting an incoming train and calling for assistance.
  • Claire Devitt: A security guarding licence holder from Cumbria, who intervened when she saw a distressed woman attempting to jump from a multi-story car park. Claire held onto the woman and supported her until Cumbria Police arrived. Her exceptional courage and compassion were praised by her employer, Securitas.

Statements from SIA Officials

Heather Baily, the current Chair of the SIA, highlighted the significance of the event, stating:

“It is especially fitting to mark the anniversary of SIA licensing as we approach International Security Officers’ Day 2024. The date 24/7 reminds us of the important role of private security in protecting people and property, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

Michelle Russell, Chief Executive of the SIA, added:

“If you encounter someone working in private security on 24/7 – please do smile, say hello and thank them. A simple greeting can go a long way in showing your appreciation to the people who work all hours, and sometimes in all weathers, to keep us safe.”

How to Show Appreciation

Members of the public are encouraged to acknowledge any security operatives they see on the day:

  • Say hello or thank you with a smile.
  • Security business owners and managers can recognize their front-line workers by:
    • Sending thank you messages to their staff.
    • Organizing events or site visits to say thank you in person.
    • Acknowledging their officers on social media.

A Look Back: 20th Anniversary Reception

The SIA 20th anniversary reception at the House of Lords was a memorable event that underscored the achievements and contributions of the private security industry over the past two decades. Speakers at the event, including Lady Meacher, Heather Baily, and Michelle Russell, shared inspiring stories and emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work and dedication of security operatives.

Statistics of SIA Licensing:

Metric Figure
Active Licenses Nearly 500,000
License Holders Over 439,000
Front-Line License Holders People who perform licensable activities as part of their job

The Importance of SIA Licensing

SIA licensing ensures that individuals working in private security meet the necessary standards to protect the public. With nearly half a million active licenses across the UK, the industry plays a crucial role in maintaining safety and security in various settings, including music concerts, sporting events, hospitals, pubs, clubs, and retail premises.

Appreciation for Security Operatives

As International Security Officers’ Day approaches, it’s an excellent opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and dedication of security operatives. Whether through a simple greeting or a more formal recognition, showing appreciation can significantly boost morale and highlight the essential role these professionals play in our daily lives.
