Thanksgiving Meals Reach U.S. Troops Around the Globe.

Nothing captures the warmth of the holidays quite like a Thanksgiving meal, even for those far from home.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Troop Support, nearly 700,000 pounds of food are shipped to military bases worldwide, ensuring service members enjoy a taste of home during the holiday season.

Months of Preparation for a Holiday Feast

Bringing Thanksgiving to the troops is no small feat. The planning begins as early as April when DLA Troop Support’s team starts sourcing ingredients for the traditional holiday spread. This early start gives vendors enough lead time to coordinate with suppliers and ship products overseas within 90 to 120 days.

Army Brig. Gen. Landis Maddox, DLA Troop Support Commander, emphasized the importance of this mission:

“Many of our service men and women are far away from their loved ones during the holidays. We need to ensure they have that traditional Thanksgiving dinner.”

The operation requires exceptional coordination between regional commands, suppliers, and logistics teams.

Thanksgiving By the Numbers

For 2023, the DLA’s shipments surpassed the previous year’s total of 360,000 pounds due to an increased U.S. military presence in Europe. Here’s what military dining facilities can expect to receive:

Food Item

Weight Shipped

Turkey 139,665 pounds
Beef 176,791 pounds
Ham 98,091 pounds
Shrimp 49,055 pounds
Sweet Potatoes 46,753 pounds
Pies and Cakes 9,324 cases
Eggnog 1,004 cases

Such meticulous planning ensures that every warfighter gets to enjoy a hot meal, embodying the spirit of Thanksgiving no matter where they are stationed.

A Team Effort Across Continents

Behind the scenes, DLA Troop Support collaborates with its regional commands—DLA Europe and Africa and DLA Indo-Pacific—alongside local vendors and distributors.

Robin Whaley, DLA’s chief of subsistence for customers outside the continental U.S., described the effort as a “Super Bowl” moment for the team.

“Food is emotional, and we want to make sure soldiers, airmen, sailors, guardians, and Marines feel a taste of home on Thanksgiving Day.”

Two elements make this operation stand out:

  • Precision logistics: Coordinating shipments across multiple time zones and continents is a challenge only a skilled team can handle.
  • Unwavering commitment: From procurement to the final delivery at dining halls, every team member plays a vital role in ensuring success.

More Than Just a Meal

For many service members, these meals serve as more than just sustenance. They symbolize a connection to loved ones and cherished traditions, offering comfort in challenging environments.

Additionally, this mission reflects the broader role of the DLA Troop Support, which annually provides $14 billion worth of essentials, including food, uniforms, and medical supplies, to the armed forces.

The Philadelphia-based agency, with roots dating back to 1800, continues to adapt and serve the evolving needs of America’s military.

Preserving Tradition Wherever Duty Calls

Ensuring a warm Thanksgiving meal for service members is about more than logistics; it’s about reinforcing the shared values and traditions that define the U.S. Armed Forces.

The Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support delivers 700,000 pounds of food worldwide, bringing a piece of home overseas.
The holiday spirit connects those serving abroad to their communities back home. Service members overseas will experience Thanksgiving warmth, thanks to the DLA’s dedicated work.
The traditional holiday meal reminds those who serve of the nation’s appreciation and steadfast support and gratitude.
