Lima, Peru – The US-Peru Child Protection Compact Partnership held its final Annual Dialogue, reflecting on 7 years of collaborative efforts to combat child trafficking, reporting significant strides in protecting children and prosecuting traffickers.

Achievements of the U.S.-Peru Child Protection Compact

Since its inception, the CPC Partnership has significantly enhanced Peru’s capacity to address child trafficking. By targeting the root causes and reinforcing legal frameworks, the initiative has made critical strides in protecting vulnerable children.

One of the standout achievements has been the creation of specialized shelters for child trafficking victims, offering a safe space and essential support services.

Additionally, the partnership succeeded in:

  • Increasing the number of specialized police and prosecutor positions dedicated to child trafficking cases.
  • Launching mental health services tailored specifically for child trafficking survivors, a first in Peru.

These accomplishments reflect the comprehensive approach of the CPC Partnership, focusing on both prosecution and victim support, ensuring that justice is served while providing essential care for victims.

Focus on Long-Term Sustainability

As the partnership comes to an end, the emphasis is on ensuring that the progress made continues to thrive. U.S. officials expressed optimism that Peru will uphold the advancements, including the operation of six specialized shelters and the newly adopted mental health protocols.

Sustained investment and community-based prevention efforts will be crucial to maintaining the momentum.

Peruvian authorities have also committed to continuing efforts through:

  • Regional public investment projects, particularly in Cusco and Loreto, which enhance local capacity to combat trafficking.
  • Ongoing collaboration with local communities and law enforcement to prevent child trafficking at its source.

This long-term approach ensures that while the formal CPC Partnership may conclude, its legacy will endure through national policies and dedicated resources.

Looking Ahead

The U.S.-Peru CPC Partnership has set a strong foundation for future anti-trafficking efforts. As the partnership winds down, the dialogue between both nations remains critical. U.S. representatives emphasized their ongoing commitment to supporting Peru in combating child trafficking, even after the formal conclusion of the partnership.

The CPC Partnership serves as a model for how international collaboration can effectively combat human trafficking and improve lives.

As Peru continues its work, the sustained involvement of local governments and international partners will be key to ensuring that the most vulnerable children are protected for generations to come.
