The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced a new Memorandum of Understanding between the UK AI Security Institute and the Australian AI Safety Institute, with UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan signing the agreement in Canberra on 25 May 2026. The partnership covers frontier AI research, cybersecurity risks and institutional collaboration between both countries.

Ministers from the United Kingdom and Australia met in Canberra on Monday 25 May to strengthen cooperation on artificial intelligence security and safety. The agreement forms part of wider engagement between both countries on emerging technologies and research coordination.

The new arrangement brings together the UK AI Security Institute and its Australian counterpart to exchange information and collaborate on AI evaluation and emerging risk research. The agreement also includes plans for closer operational cooperation between both organisations.

UK and Australia Expand AI Cooperation

The Memorandum of Understanding establishes a formal structure for cooperation between the UK and Australian institutes focused on AI security work. Ministers from both governments attended the signing during discussions in Canberra.

The agreement extends existing ties between the two countries into AI-related policy and research activity. The agreement includes operational cooperation involving research exchange, AI evaluation and information sharing between both institutes.

  • Participating bodies: The UK AI Security Institute and Australian AI Safety Institute will work jointly under the agreement.
  • Ministerial involvement: UK and Australian ministers participated in discussions supporting the arrangement.

New Agreement Focuses on AI Security Risks

Both institutes will share information relating to developments in frontier AI systems and potential security concerns. Areas under review include cyber activity and understanding how AI systems may affect security environments.

Research cooperation also covers approaches to evaluating and testing AI systems. The work focuses on evaluating system behaviour and identifying potential cyber and security risks linked to frontier AI systems.

  • Cyber focus: Collaboration includes examining how AI systems may affect cyber defence and attack capabilities.
  • Research activity: Institutes will exchange findings and evaluation approaches.

Research Collaboration and Information Sharing

The partnership includes the possibility of staff exchanges between the two institutes. This would strengthen day-to-day collaboration and support practical working relationships.

The arrangement supports exchange of research findings, capability assessments and evaluation approaches between both institutes.

AI Research Highlights Growing Cyber Capabilities

Recent research from the UK AI Security Institute reported rapid improvements in AI systems linked to complex cybersecurity activity. The findings identified developing capabilities that may affect both defensive and offensive environments.

The institute stated that research findings continue informing UK policy work connected to AI security and public protection measures.

Ministerial Comments

Kanishka Narayan, UK AI Minister said;

“Australia and the UK have always worked closely to keep our people safe – and that partnership matters more than ever in the age of AI. This technology is moving fast, and so are the risks that come with it – particularly in areas like cyber security.”

Wider International AI Security Strategy

The AI Security Institute already works with international research bodies through global cooperation arrangements and bilateral partnerships. The agreement with Australia adds to existing international engagement activities.

The UK government said international cooperation supports research coordination and evaluation of emerging AI capabilities.

The UK and Australia have expanded cooperation on AI security through a new institutional agreement focused on research, evaluation and information sharing. The arrangement connects ongoing research activity with broader international cooperation involving emerging technologies. Collaboration between trusted partners will support understanding of evolving AI systems and strengthen coordination on security-related developments.
