Further Support to UNSOS Aims to Enhance Somali Security Forces’ Capabilities
The United Kingdom (UK) has shown its unwavering commitment to Somalia’s security stability by announcing a further £5 million in support for the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). This funding, channeled through the UNSOS Trust Fund, aims to provide non-lethal support to the Somali Security Forces (SSF) in their ongoing fight against al-Shabaab.
UNSOS Trust Fund: A Lifeline for SSF
Administered by UNSOS, the Trust Fund plays a pivotal role in offering non-lethal logistical support to the SSF. It avails essential resources such as rations, tents, and lifesaving medevac assistance. Currently, the Trust Fund supports 14,900 Somali National Army and 1,000 Somali National Police forces.
However, with input from contributing countries like the UK, the aim is to extend support to 18,900 SSF members.
Boosting SSF Capabilities: A Step Towards Counter-Terrorism
The funding is not just a lifeline for the troops, but a significant contribution to ongoing counter-terrorism efforts against al-Shabaab. It will facilitate the SSF’s development through the provision of logistical support, including fuel, rations, and materials for setting up forward operating bases.
Additionally, the funding will enhance the operational readiness and efficiency of the SSF by providing necessary communication equipment.
UK’s Stance: A Steadfast Supporter
The UK continues to stand as a firm supporter of Somalia’s security transition process, which seeks to increase the SSF’s responsibility for national security and stability. Mike Nithavrianakis, the British Ambassador to Somalia, expressed that this round of support will make a crucial difference to the Somali Security Forces’ efforts to defeat extremist groups like al-Shabaab and restore regional stability.
The Response: Warm Welcome and Gratitude
The additional contribution from the UK was warmly received by Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuddin, the Commander of the Somalia National Army, who emphasized the importance of consistent support in this transition period.
Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of UNSOS, also expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued support, highlighting its significant impact on bolstering the capabilities of the Somali Security Forces.
The UK’s Continued Support: A Journey to a Safer Somalia
This latest funding, following a significant contribution of £5 million in December 2023, demonstrates the UK’s ongoing commitment. Since 2022, the UK has made over £20 million in voluntary contributions in support of UNSOS, all while striving towards a safer Somalia.
