The UK and ASEAN are strengthening their partnership with a focus on technology commercialisation, launching the ASEAN i-Teams Programme to support innovation.

The initiative, modelled on the successful University of Cambridge i-Teams approach, aims to boost tech ecosystems and economic growth across the region.

UK-ASEAN Partnership Boosts Innovation & Growth

The United Kingdom and ASEAN have teamed up to advance technology commercialisation efforts through the ASEAN i-Teams Programme, a collaborative initiative developed with the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI).

The programme was highlighted during the 86th COSTI Meeting held in Singapore, bringing together experts, policymakers, and university representatives from ASEAN Member States.

The ASEAN i-Teams Programme, inspired by the University of Cambridge’s i-Teams model launched in 2006, is designed to help universities translate research into market-ready technologies.

This hands-on approach has been successfully piloted at two major ASEAN universities: Hanoi University of Science and Technology (Vietnam) and Bandung Institute of Technology (Indonesia).

A Platform for Knowledge Sharing

In Singapore, the UK and ASEAN delegates exchanged insights and experiences from the pilot programmes in Vietnam and Indonesia.

British High Commissioner to Singapore, Nikesh Mehta OBE, highlighted the impact of this collaboration:

“The ASEAN i-Teams Programme is an excellent example of how the UK and ASEAN can work together to build a culture of innovation that transcends borders.”

The event highlighted the UK’s dedication to fostering ASEAN’s growth in technology and innovation, demonstrating its commitment to a thriving regional ecosystem.

By leveraging the i-Teams programme, the UK aims to empower ASEAN universities to transform their groundbreaking research into commercial successes, thereby boosting industries and improving lives across Southeast Asia.

Consequently, this collaboration will bridge the gap between academic innovation and real-world application, driving economic progress and social development.

Ultimately, the UK’s support will cultivate a culture of entrepreneurship, enabling ASEAN nations to harness their full potential and compete on the global stage.

Tech Commercialisation in Southeast Asia

The ASEAN i-Teams Programme aims to accelerate tech commercialisation in the region by focusing on university-industry collaboration and training multi-disciplinary student teams in market research and product development.

However, the programme also addresses the challenges faced by ASEAN nations in scaling up these innovations.

Participants in the session engaged in group discussions to explore how this Cambridge-inspired model could be tailored to address specific needs in Southeast Asia, ensuring that the programme is adaptable and beneficial across different local contexts.

To provide a clear view of the programme’s objectives and benefits, the following information outlines the focus of the ASEAN i-Teams Programme:

Objective

The Focus Areas

Expected Impact

Knowledge Exchange Sharing UK expertise in tech commercialisation Strengthening ASEAN’s innovation capacity
University-Industry Collaboration Facilitating partnerships across sectors Bridging the gap between research and market
Economic Growth Supporting new business creation Enhancing job opportunities and local economies

This structured approach reflects the programme’s aim to not only foster technological growth but also to create robust economic opportunities across ASEAN.

Collaborative Spirit: Building a Stronger UK-ASEAN Relationship

The collaboration represents a deepening of ties between the UK and ASEAN, with both sides eager to strengthen their partnership in science and technology. UK Ambassador to ASEAN, Sarah Tiffin, expressed optimism about the ongoing cooperation:

“The i-Teams programme is an exciting addition to the growing portfolio of cooperation between ASEAN and the UK in science and technology.”

The UK and ASEAN will drive innovation, share knowledge, and cultivate entrepreneurial ecosystems that fuel sustainable growth through their partnership.

The ASEAN COSTI Chair, Dr. HUL Seingheng, also underscored the significance of this initiative, noting how it aligns with broader regional development goals.

Future Opportunities and Collaborations

The ASEAN i-Teams Programme has demonstrated impressive potential in Vietnam and Indonesia, paving the way for further expansion across other ASEAN Member States.

Meanwhile, the UK’s continued support underscores its commitment to nurturing a culture of innovation that thrives on knowledge exchange and collaboration. Consequently, this partnership will foster a vibrant ecosystem, driving growth and progress across the region.

Future developments include the potential expansion of the programme to more ASEAN universities, along with increased engagement with industry partners. This initiative not only strengthens research and innovation systems but also opens doors for young professionals and students in the region.

Summary

The UK and ASEAN are joining forces to propel the ASEAN i-Teams Programme to the forefront of the region’s innovation landscape. By doing so, they will boost tech commercialisation and bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application.

As the UK and ASEAN move forward together, they will foster a more interconnected and economically vibrant future, unlocking benefits for both regions.
