The UK has secured a £65 million deal to develop the Borealis command, control, and data processing system, enhancing military satellite protection and creating around 100 skilled jobs in Leatherhead, Reading, and Bristol.

This initiative aligns with the UK’s Plan for Change, boosting national security and economic growth.

Enhancing National Security

The Borealis system represents a significant advancement in the UK’s ability to monitor and protect its space assets. By compiling and processing data from multiple sources, it will improve space domain awareness.

This enhancement is crucial as space becomes increasingly congested with users and debris. The system not only safeguards UK satellites but also extends protection to those of allies and partners.

Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Rt Hon Maria Eagle MP, said:

“This new deal delivers for our national security by enhancing protection for our satellite technology that millions rely on, while boosting jobs and growth at home.

This Government continues to work swiftly to develop the new Defence Industrial Strategy. This announcement will support hundreds of highly skilled jobs, unlocking defence as an engine for growth and driving forward this government’s Plan for Change.”

Economic Growth Through Innovation

This investment supports approximately 100 skilled jobs across Leatherhead, Reading, and Bristol. These positions contribute to local economies while aligning with the government’s broader strategy to use defense as an engine for economic growth.

The Borealis project exemplifies how technological innovation can drive job creation and economic development.

Maj Gen Paul Tedman, Commander of UK Space Command, said:

“The use of space is crucial for our economy, prosperity, security, and defence, but assured access to space is becoming increasingly contested by adversaries and congested by users and debris. Therefore, it is imperative that we know what is happening in space.

Borealis is an innovative system that draws together multiple inputs to enhance the UK government’s understanding of the wide-ranging activity on orbit, allowing the UK to protect not just our own space assets, but those of our allies and partners as well.”

Benefits for Local Communities

  • Creation of around 100 skilled jobs in key UK locations
  • Boosts local economies through increased employment opportunities
  • Supports the UK’s Plan for Change by driving economic growth
  • Enhances national security through improved satellite protection
  • Fosters international collaboration by protecting allied space assets

A Step Towards Global Space Leadership

The Borealis system positions the UK as a leader in global space governance. By enhancing its capabilities in space surveillance and protection, the UK strengthens its role in international discussions on space cooperation.

This development may influence how other countries perceive the UK’s military capabilities.
